AWARDS BANQUET 11/18/2008
The Scholar Athlete Award for XC went to Avi Hecht with a 4.6 GPA, with honorable mention to Alex Dubin with a 4.4 GPA. Raquel Hefflin received the MVP award for girls, while Alex Falcon won the MVP for boys. The best Freshman/Rookie awards went to Josh Galen for boys and Brianna Simmons for girls. Other runners recognized were Gunther Klaus, Sydney Grey, and Jamie Bratman. Special recognition went to Sara Jabbari. She ends her XC career at Beverly with the following legacy: since the inception of the program in 1930 she is the only runner to obtain 4 straight All League honors, the only runner to be on 4 league championship teams, she is on the most All Time lists in XC with a total of 10, is on the Dynamite Dozen list for Rancho Park, and has competed in 4 straight CIF championship meets. Thanks go out to the alumni and parents who support the team and those who made the banquet a success this year; and special thanks goes out to Fidel Dominguez our head cross country coach.

GIRLS VARSITY MISSES MAKING CIF FINALS—
We can’t say that our Varsity Girls did not have a great season. Although we had injuries and surgeries —the girls kept performing going undefeated in league and taking individual honors at various invitationals. Going into CIF prelims the team had won their 4th straight league title and Raquel Hefflin was league Champion, with 4 other girls making All League. Hefflin set school records for MT SAC, Kenneth Hahn Park and Pepperdine-Malibu, while Jamie Bratman set school records for Rosemead Invite and Cerritos Regional Park. The girls drew the toughest heat at CIF with 17 schools that qualified for the race, which included Saugus the No. 1 team in the nation, and Sultana, El Modena and Newbury Park all in the top 8 in CIF. That alone took 4 spots for the CIF Final, leaving Beverly, Loara and University (Irvine) to fight it out for the 5th and final spot to the CIF Finals. Beverly took 7th place, respectable but not enough, as University (Irvine) took the 5th spot, while Loara took 6th just ahead of Beverly. Out of the 123 runners, Raquel Hefflin was our first runner finishing in 18th place in a time of 19:36 (shy of her best on the course of 19:29–the school record), with a top 20 finish —which has not been done by a girl runner at Beverly since 1993. Jamie Bratman finished in 43rd in 20:55 (moves up to #12 on the MT SAC All Time Beverly List), with Sydney Grey in 44th in 21:02 (moves up to #14 on MT SAC All Time Beverly List); Sara Jabbari in 50th in 21:23 (her best is 20:56 on the course #13 on the All Time List); Brianna Simmons in 61st in 21:51 (moves into #25 on All Time List); Nicole Weinstein in 62nd in 21:52 (her best is 21:42 as #22 on All Time List) and Gitla Shooster in 69th in 22:02 (missing the All Time List by 3 seconds, but improved her time on the course by over 1 minute!). Our league rival Santa Monica took 12th out of 14 teams in their Division 1 CIF heat, while Culver City took last place in the 17 field team in their Division 2 CIF heat.
BOYS VARSITY END LONG SEASON AT CIF PRELIMS
The Boys Varsity ended their long season at the CIF Prelims taking 12th out of 13 schools in their CIF heat. The boys looked worn out since league finals and ran much slower than their best times on the MT SAC course. Gunther Klaus who took 2nd in league finished in 49th place in 16:59 (which just made the All Time List at #20 for Beverly on the course); while Alex Cascante finished in 70th in 17:29; Alex Falcon in 72nd in 17:37; Nick Harper in 76th in 17:42; Ali Hatcher in 83rd in 18:03; Byron Myles in 88th in 18:32; and freshman Josh Galen in 91st in 18:37. We lose for next year seniors Gunther Klaus, Alex Falcon and Byron Myles, which means our boys varsity team will need to regroup if they want to challenge Santa Monica for the league championship next year. League champion Santa Monica finished in 9th place in their CIF Division 1 heat and failed to make CIF Finals.

GIRLS VARSITY TAKES OCEAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR IN CONVINCING FASHION
RAQUEL HEFFLIN WINS INDIVIDUAL LEAGUE TITLE SETTING NEW SCHOOL RECORD; WHILE 5 GIRLS TAKE ALL LEAGUE HONORS
The Girls Varsity showed why they were undefeated in League this year winning their 4th straight league championship, taking 5 of the first 7 places in league. Junior Raquel Hefflin took the individual league championship in first place setting a new school record over the Kenneth Hahn 3 mile course in a time of 20:41.74, breaking Valerie Wirtschafter’s school record of 21:11.06 in 2006, and becoming the first girl at Beverly to break the 21 minute barrier on what is considered one of the toughest cross country courses in Southern California. If that were not enough all league honors were bestowed upon sophomore Sydney Grey who took third in 21:14.17 (Beverly’s third all time best performance on the course); junior Jamie Bratman in fourth in 21:36.83 (Beverly’s seventh all time best performance on the course—coming off a leg injury otherwise she would have been favored to take no less than 2nd in league); senior Sara Jabbari in sixth in 22:03.27 and a surprise finish in seventh by freshman Brianna Simmons in 22:07.24. What was even more astounding in their performance was that are top 5 girls averaged 21:32.66 as a team when the old school record for an individual was 21:11.06 before the meet! It should be noted that senior Sara Jabbari made history by becoming the first cross country runner at Beverly to garner all league honors for 4 straight years. The girls now go to the CIF prelims on Saturday November 15, 2008 at MT SAC.

The Santa Monica Boys dominated the league finals as Beverly was relegated to 2nd place, but which still qualifies them for the CIF prelims. The star performance was by senior Gunther Klaus taking second place to top runner Ezana Tesfu of SAMO. Klaus time of 17:34.57 was good enough to make the Beverly all time list (6th best) on the Kenneth Hahn course. The only other runner to make All League was junior Alex Cascante in eighth place in a time of 18:01.00. The team other than Klaus have run better on the course and a number of our runners who should have been on the top 10 to make All League just did not have a good day.

Freshman Josh Galen won the individual league championship in 18:58.54 nearly 30 seconds ahead of his next rival. However, 5 runners made All League in the freshmen division for Beverly, which included Galen in first, Spencer Fogelman in third in 19:46.10; Alexander Tsankov in sixth in 20:19.63; Michael Huntsman in ninth in 20:48.02 and Cameron Moulene in tenth in 20:57.30.

A NEW EPISODE OF LOST
BOYS FRESHMAN ARE EDGED OUT BY SAMO AS 30+ runners go off course.
Josh Galen and Gabe Laemmmle go 1-2
In a bizarre set of circumstances the first 5 runners in the race finished normally with Josh Galen (20:24.21) and Gabe Laemmle (20:43.86) of Beverly finishing in 1st and 2nd [the only runners under 21 minutes] with Santa Monica following in 3rd, 4th and 5th place. Then the crowd stood dumbfounded as more than 4 minutes went by without another finisher! What happened was that the next 30+ runners went off course and continued running in circles at the back end of the course where spectators can’t see the runners. The runners that were so far back in 40th place and those that realized their mistake who came back on the course, ended up coming in 6th through 15th place. 30+ runners never found the finish line. Without Michael Huntsman in the race for Beverly it was difficult enough but now it was a fiasco and Santa Monica ended up upsetting Beverly 26 to 29. As Beverly won the 1st league cluster, now the league finals will determine the league champion. Some say some of the runners may still be out on the course lost. A search party was sent out to retrieve them. Others say that some Beverly Hills Studio executive will have them in the new season of LOST running around the island.
Results: 1. Josh Galen 20:24.21; 2. Gabe Laemmle 20:43.86; 7. Alexander Tsankov 25:59.53; 9. Eric Simsolo 26:37.24; 10. Andrew Schwab 26:53.63. [only 15 finishers out of 48 runners]
