CIF MASTERS MEET

SANDIFER TAKES 6th Place in 110 High Hurdles in 14.70

SIMMONS TAKES 8th Place in 800 meters in 1:54.80

The CIF Masters Meet to qualify for STATE was held at Cerritos College on Friday May 23, 2008 on a wet track that saw the rain off and on during the meet.  The top 5 plus those who perform the State standard advance to STATE.  Dominique Sandifer took 6th place and his time of 14.70 was short of the State standard of 14.37.  More heart-breaking was Jonathan Simmons 8th place finish in 1:54.80, just four hundredths of a second from meeting the State standard of 1:54.76!

The Track & Field Banquet will be held on June 5, 2008, where we can say our farewells to the Senior Class

CIF DIVISION 2 FINALS at MT SAC May 17, 2008:

SANDIFER TAKES 4th in 110m Hurdles & 4th in 300m Hurdles CIF FINALS;  SIMMONS  TAKES 5th in 800m CIF FINALS

BOYS TEAM FINISHES IN 3 WAY TIE FOR 17th PLACE IN CIF FINALS

It was 97 degrees and the heat was unbearable preventing many performers from competing at their usual level.   Dominique Sandifer took 4th place in the 110m hurdles in 14.58 (#3 all time at Beverly) which qualified him for the CIF Masters Meet and he also took 4th in the 300m hurdles in 39.43, which was short of qualifying for the CIF Masters Meet.   Jonathan Simmons not running one of his best races managed to take 5th in the 800m in 1:56.20, but that was still good enough to make the CIF Masters Meet.   At the Masters Meet the top 5 will advance to the CIF STATE MEET, plus any at large bids that meet the State Standard.   Sandifer will have to be in the top 5 or run the 14.37 standard for his event.  Simmons will have to be in the top 5 or run the 1:54.76 standard, which he has bettered this year.   Simmons did beat his cousin Johnathan Shawel of Troy who did not qualify for the Masters Meet.   Sophomore Raquel Hefflin the sole girl at Beverly to make the CIF Finals took a respectable 7th place in 2:20.38 against some very stiff competition. The heat especially effected the shot putters who in general were way below the performances at the prelims.  Shayhad Meshkaty took 9th place in the CIF Finals with a throw of 49-9 3/4.   Sophomore Trevor Walters with a strained hamstring had to scratch from the 100 meters.  Too bad as “sophomore rankings” had him in a three way tie at #7 in State this year.

——-The Boys team scored 14 points that placed them in a tie with Ayala and Edison High Schools for #17 place.   Loyola took 1st in team honors with JW North in second.   Rival Culver City took 48th place.  In the girls competition Woodbridge took 1st place, while Culver City took 3rd place.  Beverly with Hefflin’s points finished in a 3 way tie for 43rd place with La Mirada and Vista del Lago.

SANDIFER, SIMMONS, WALTERS, MESHKATY & HEFFLIN QUALIFY FOR CIF FINALS!

May 10, 2008 @ Moorpark H.S. CIF Prelims.  The top 9 performers qualify for CIF Finals.

SANDIFER:   Plagued with injuries this year Dominique Sandifer came back for the CIF Prelims in a rush.  In the 110m Hurdles he ran the 5th fastest time of the day in 14.74; then came back to win his heat in the 300m Hurdles with the third fastest time of the day in 39.42.  That was after stumbling on the last hurdle.  Now he is among the favorites for the CIF title.

SIMMONS:  Jonathan Simmons also out with injuries this year took 2nd in his heat in 1:55.91, with about 5 runners all bunched at the top for the Finals next week.  Simmons has already run 1:53.23 this year, the 3rd fastest time in State and will be among the favorites to take the CIF title.  His cousin Johnathan Shawel of Troy H.S. also made the finals—so family bragging rights might be on the line next week in the finals.

WALTERS:  The day began on a sour note as Trevor Walters anchored the 4X100m relay team of Elliot Peaks, Julian Sarokin and Kenny Bassett finishing in 2nd place to Compton in their heat in a sub 43 second relay that would have easily qualified the team for the CIF Finals—-but the team was disqualified on the basis that Walters stepped slightly out of his lane.  Walters though came back with a vengeance in the 100m race where he took 2nd in 10.97 to qualify for the CIF Finals.  He is one of two finalists that are only sophomores.

MESHKATY:   Shayhad Meshkaty in a very tough shot put field had to throw a lifetime best of 53-9 more than a foot and one half farther than his previous best to get into that select group of 9 to make it to the CIF Finals.  His throw moves him up to #3 all time Varsity at Beverly for the event.

HEFFLIN:    Sophomore Raquel Hefflin in the Girls 800m qualified for the CIF Finals in 2:18.29.  Her time moves her to #4 Varsity all time at Beverly and #2 Frosh Soph at Beverly.  The school record for FS is 2:15 by Barbara Gottlieb, who also holds the Varsity record at 2:11.64.  Hefflin becomes only the 4th girl at Beverly to break the 2:20 barrier and she is only a sophomore!

Others:   The girls 4X100m Relay of Erika Hill, Rikka Springfield, Andrea Wilson and Asia Williams took 3rd in their heat in a time of 49.97 short of qualifying for the Finals.  Rikka Springfield took 6th in her heat of the 200m in 26.24.  Brianna Smith went 16-2 1/2 in the LJ and 33-1 1/2 in the TJ.

Sophomore Andie Sunwoo ran 16.89 in the 110m H and Sophomore Marcus Silberger ran 16.06 in the 100m H.    Sophomore Brenna Coates ran 12:13.74 in the 3200m.  Junior Andrea Wilson ran a personal best 51.42 in the 300m H.   Caylin Hauptman also threw a personal best in the Shot Put 46-8 1/4.  Ashwin Thomas ran 2:04.14 in the 800m and Freshman Justin Cooper was among 40 contestants that only saw 17 performers clear opening height at 6-0, a height Cooper has not made.   The good news is that many of our performers are frosh sophs and will be back next year.

Ocean League Finals (Beverly Hills, Culver City, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Morningside and Santa Monica High Schools).  With the winds howling on the backstretch of the track the middle distance and distance runners as a result ran slower times and cost many top runners from Beverly and Santa Monica (the distance powers in league) to not meet the CIF qualifying standards.   The meet should have been held at Beverly as was originally scheduled, where the wind is not a major factor.   That did not stop some runners from excelling despite the winds, and the sprint events were not effected.

FROSH SOPH GIRLS:   Having won the team championship with a 5-0 record, the girls showed why they were league champions, taking 12 first places!  The soph-frosh girls did an outstanding job led by freshman Sydney Grey who did the improbable by winning league in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m (and even ran a relay leg in the 4X400m team that took 2nd in league).  Her time in the 1600m of 5:43.22 would have taken second in Varsity and her 800m time of 2:31.64 would have taken 4th in Varsity.    Her twin sister Katie Grey took 2nd in the 800m in 2:35.47, a very fast time as well.  Top sprinter Kiarra Brown took 1st in league in the 100m and 200m sprints and anchored the 400m relay to 1st place.  Dejah McCoy won both the Long Jump in 15-4 and Triple Jump in 30-5 1/2 (with Angie Kang in 2nd in 30-5 and Tamara Skootsky in 3rd in 29-0 1/2) and was on the 400m relay team that took 1st.   Skyline Kim won the High Jump in 4-8.  Micah Winter won the Pole Vault in 6-7.  Kim Horton won the 100m Hurdles in 18.96 and Gabi Marvasi won the 300m Hurdles in 54.39.

VARSITY GIRLS:   The Varsity girls having won league with a record of 5-0 turned to the individual honors.  The hurdles were dominated by Beverly as Sophomore Andie Sunwoo took 1st in the 100m Hurdles in 17.14 with teammate Jodi Raffi in 2nd in 17.75.  Andrea Wilson then took 1st in the 300m Hurdles in 53.60 with Breanna Bonner in 3rd in 55.97.    Sophomore Brenna Coates led a sweep of the 3200m winning in 12:28.46, followed by Sophomore Jamie Bratman in 2nd in 12:43.07 and Junior Sara Jabarri taking 3rd in 12:47.22 —a surprise sweep over rival Santa Monica.  Jabarri also took 3rd in the 1600m in 5:50.69.  Brianna Smith took 1st in the long jump in 16-1 and 3rd in the triple jump in 33-9.  Sophomore Raquel Hefflin took 2nd in the 800m in 2:22.47 behind Culver City’s All-American in the event Senior Anniya Louis a favorite to win State.   Hefflin hopes to break the 2:20 barrier at CIF.  Rikka Springfield took 3rds in  both the 200m in 26.59 and 400m in 62.89 in fast races.  The 400m relay took second with Erika Hill, Rikka Springfield, Andrea Wilson & Asia Williams in 50.62.

VARSITY BOYS:  The Boys finished 4-1 for 2nd in league behind Santa Monica.  Jonathan Simmons easily won the 800m in 1:58.33 (his 1:53.23 at Mt Sac is 3rd fastest in State this year).  The surprise was Ashwin Thomas taking 2nd in 2:01.24 who also qualified for CIF in the 800m, where he hopes to break 2 minutes.  Shayhad Meshkaty won the Shot Put in 52-1 (#6 Varsity all time) and took 2nd in the discus in 128-5.  Dominique Sandifier plagued with injuries this year took 1st in the 110m Hurdles in 15.04 and 3rd in the 300m Hurdles in 42.44.  Sophomore Marcus Silberger took 3rd in the 110m Hurdles in 16.01.   Freshman Justin Cooper took 1st in the high jump in 5-5, with Andrew Lee in 3rd at 5-4.

SIMMONS WINS 800m AT MT SAC RELAYS–2nd FASTEST TIME IN STATE.   HEFFLIN TAKES 5th in  800m. Girls & Boys 4 X 1600m Relays Set New School Records!

April 19, 2008.   In the Premier MT SAC Relays, Jonathan Simmons ran away with first place in the 800m in a time of 1:53.23, the second fastest time in State this year, beating out top runners from Canada, Utah, Nevada and California.  The top time in State was run earlier last week by Sebastian Sam of Oak Grove, CA in 1:53.17, less than a tenth of second faster than Simmons,  but Simmons time of last year of 1:52.73 when he set the school record is superior—and now Simmons has to be among the favorites in the State Championship.   Sophomore Raquel Hefflin took 5th in the seeded Girls 800m in a time of 2:20.71, the second fastest time at Beverly for a Frosh-Soph, and now only has Barbara Gottlieb’s FS School record of 2:15.00 before her.  She also moves up to #5 all time on Varsity.  She also ran the fastest leg in the Girls 4X1600m Relay running 5:37.69 (#5 FS and #15 Varsity all time), with Brenna Coates at 5:46.91 (#16 FS and #27 Varsity), with prior all time listers Jamie Bratman (5:47.09) and Sarah Jabbari (5:50.20)—taking 5th place and smashing the school record running 23:02.13.   The Boys 4X1600m Relay of Alex Falcon (4:41.67), Alex Cascante (4:54.85), Ashwin Thomas (4:57.12) and Byron Myles (4:59.63) ran 19:33.60 setting a new school record as well.   The girls 4X100m relay of Kiarra Brown, Rikka Springfield, Andrea Wilson and Asia Williams did not fair as well, after having gone out quickly, baton passing was their undoing and they faded to a 51.43 clocking—dashing their hopes to go under 50 seconds.

BOYS FS:  While the Boys FS took a number of firsts and seconds in the meet losing by only 9 points, the highlight of the meet was when AJ Karon took 1st in the 400m in 54.8 (54.94 FAT).

CONTROVERSY IN BOYS 4X800m RELAY AT ARCADIA INVITE

April 11, 2008.    The Boys 4X800m relay team of Austin Baker (2:04.5), Chatura De Silva (2:03.5), Ashwin Thomas (2:02.5) and Jonathan Simmons (1:54.5) ran away with the 4X800m Relay race at Arcadia in a new school record of 8:05.00, the 13th fastest time in State this year.  However, they were then disqualified on the basis that our first runner allegedly ran out of lane.  Another team videotaped the race and it clearly showed we did not run out of lane, but another runner on another team did, a case of mistaken identity.  The disqualification held— as it was ruled even with the error a judges decision cannot be changed under CIF rules which follows the National Federation of High School Rules (“NFHS”).  However, the “2008 NFHS Track & Field Points of Emphasis” sets forth that “fairness” is the key component and that “keeping fairness to each participant at the core, will inspire that meets are run consistently and fairly” and that the rules are only one leg of a three legged stool, whereby the other two legs are to assure fairness and a balance to achieve fairness.  Our team did not break any rules.  To hold on to such a decision of mistaken identity seems contrary to the goals of the NFHS Rules.  Then it is not the athletes who have broken the rules, but the officials who have broken the rule of fairness.  Whether the decision of disqualification stands is unknown at this time as the meet director Rich Gonzalez and the CIF Track & Field Interpreter of Rules Hal Harkness have been asked to reverse the decision.  Regardless of the final decision, the team’s new school record will be recognized by the Official Statistician for Beverly.   We, as Normans, know the true results, and an erroneous disqualification and lack of medals will not change the accomplishment of our boys.  Life is not always fair, and that is a lesson to be learned.  However, as Normans we pick ourselves up and just do that much better in the next competition, whether it is on the track or school or in life.  For 80 years our rallying cry is and remains “GO NORMANS!”
