MT SAC INVITE:  HEFFLIN TAKES 9th, WHILE GIRLS VARSITY NABS 5th PLACE AS TEAM

10/14/09 @ MT SAC 3 Mile Course.

MT SAC INVITE the largest cross country gathering in the nation, with over 50 ranked teams in State, ranked teams in the nation, and literally over 100 high school races with 100‘s of teams and thousands of runners is a running happening.   With Varsity races, Sophomore and Freshman races in every Division—the Girls Varsity held their own as they finished 5th in their Division II race of 24 teams.  Raquel Hefflin took an outstanding 9th place in 19:32, just short of her school record of 19:29.   Gitla Shooster in 21st place (20:30) and Sydney Gray in 26th place (20:49) both moved up into the top 10 all time list at Beverly for the course to shore up the 5th place team finish.  On the boys Varsity Ali Hatcher led the way in 36th place in a time of 17:32.  In the boys Freshman race Chanan Batra’s performance deserves recognition as he finished in 24th place in a time of 19:03. HEFFLIN, GRAY & SHOOSTER TAKE 1-2-3 FOR OCEAN LEAGUE VICTORY OVER SANTA MONICA

10/15/09 @ KENNETH HAHN PARK 3 MILES

Raquel Hefflin once again took victory at the Ocean League Cluster Meet, #2, this time breaking her own school record by running 20:34.67 over the 3 mile course.  Sydney Gray (on her birthday) took second in 21:57.30 and Gitla Shooster took third in 21:59.97 for a Beverly sweep and victory.  Brianna Simmons took 5th place in 22:35.98.  The league finals will be held on November 5, 2009 where the girls will be going for an unprecedented 5th straight league championship.   The JV girls edged out Santa Monica 27 to 28 with freshman Lily Ting taking 2nd place in a fine time of 23:51.  The Boys Varsity was plagued with injuries, as Santa Monica swept victory easily, as was the case with our JV boys.  Gabe Laemmle was our sole Varsity runner in the top 10 taking 9th in 19:29.33.  Our Frosh Boys faired well losing to Santa Monica 20 to 35, with Eli Flesh taking 4th in 19:56.89.  Culver City, Morningside and Inglewood were not factors as Beverly and Santa Monica dominated all the races.

VARSITY GIRLS TAKE 3RD AT CENTRAL PARK INVITE; HEFFLIN TAKES 3RD PLACE FOLLOWED BY GRAY IN 9TH

10/9/09 Central Park Invite 3 Miles @ Huntington Beach

With over 20 teams entered girl’s ranked power Corona Del Mar took first, with the Beverly Girls giving a shock to the field by finishing third as a team– behind ranked Yucca Valley by just 5 points, and finishing ahead of ranked Mayfield and Huntington Beach as the first 5 teams were awarded trophies.  Individually, Corona Del Mar’s power runners Melanie Powers and Marisa Cummings took 1-2, but then Beverly’s Raquel Hefflin took a convincing third in 18:59, with the top 3 breaking 19 minutes for the course.  The old Beverly record for Central Park was held by Lisa Harris in 20:04 back in 1987.  Sydney Gray who finished in the top 10– taking 9th place also broke the Beverly record as she ran 19:49.  Gitla Shooster (on her birthday) just missed also breaking the record taking 17th in 20:09 (#4 all time).  Beverly having 3 girls in the top 20 was the key to their 3rd place finish as a team.  Our first 5 girls made the all time list, while freshman Erica Hendry just missed by 3 seconds and freshman Lily Ting missed by 8 seconds.  In the other division races for our boys and girls we did not place nor did any individual place in the top 20.

9/24/09 @ Kenneth Hahn Park 3 Miles [Beverly, SAMO, Culver, Morningside, Inglewood]

Defending league champion Raquel Hefflin took 1st place in 21:26, while Sydney Gray took 3rd and Gitla Shooster took 4th as the Beverly Girls go for their 5th straight Varsity League Championship.  Missing from action was last year’s all league member Brianna Simmons.  Her return will make Beverly’s girls team that much stronger for League meet #2 and the league finals.  The Boys Varsity, Girls JV, Boys JV and Boys Frosh all took 2nd to SAMO.  The boys Varsity were led by Ali Hatcher who took 3rd place in the same time as Daniel Reddick of SAMO in 17:47, while Nick Slazar of SAMO won in 17:35.  In the Girls JV Beverly’s Lily Ting won.

SOUTH BAY CUP 9/30/09  @ Columbia Park Torrance

The Varsity teams for Beverly did not compete.  The top highlights for Beverly were Brianna Simmons return taking 15th place in the Girls JV out of 116 runners in a time of 21:12.3.  Gabe Laemmle took 11th in the Boys Soph race out of 129 runners in a time of 17:17.1.  Lily Ting took 22nd place in the Girls Frosh race out of 101 runners in a time of 21:58.4. The Girls JV had the best performance of the day for Beverly as they took 6th place as a team.

BREA OLINDA INVITE 10/3/09 @ Carbon Cyn Park 3 miles

With over 40 teams entered in the invite and apx. 300-400 runners in each race, the Girls Varsity took 8th place in a strong field, led by Raquel Hefflin in 11th place and Sydney Gray taking 23rd place.

RAQUEL HEFFLIN TAKES 1ST AT PHIL RYAN INVITE @ LACY PARK, SAN MARINO AS GIRLS TAKE 2nd AS TEAM.   Sept. 16, 2009.

Raquel Hefflin started the season with a bang as she took first place honors at the Phil Ryan Invite running the 3 mile course in 19:30, while Gitla Shooster took 3rd place in 20:16 and Sydney Gray taking 10th place in 20:48.  The Girls Varsity took 2nd as a team losing out to Valley View.  The Girl’s Varsity is seeking their 5th straight Ocean League Title, with the first Ocean League meet on 9-24-09.  Hefflin is the defending league champion, while Sydney Gray was 3rd in league last year. In the Girls Frosh Soph race of 2.1 miles, Brianna Simmons took 2nd place in 14:33 just losing out to Valley View’s Belinda Newson who won in 14:27.  On the Boys side Ali Hatcher led the way in 12th place in 17:37; a race won by Jason Pang of Cantwell in 16:34.  The following are the top performances by the Beverly team:
