BOYS 4X100m Relay Takes 5th in STATE

“ROCKY” HEFFLIN in 800m Takes 6th in STATE in School Record 2:11.12

Just making it to the California State Track & Field Championship Meet is an accomplishment.   The last time Beverly was at the State Meet and won medals was back in 1998 (Note: the top 6 medal in State finals).   In the State prelims our boys 4X100m relay quartet of Kenny Bassett, Julian Sarokin, Trevor Walters and Cameron Countryman took 2nd to eventual final winner Long Beach Poly to qualify for the finals.  In the finals Beverly took 5th in a day that the crosswinds slowed the relay times.   Beverly ran 41.76, and ended the season as the fifth best sprint relay team in the State Finals.  Their 41.52 school record this year is tied for #39 in the U.S.  [It should be noted that Zach Gallagher was our alternate relay runner at State]

Raquel Hefflin was in the loaded Girls 800m field and took 2nd in the prelims in 2:12.17 to Savannah Camacho of Templeton to qualify for the finals that saw all 9 girls under 2:13.00 just to make the finals.   In the finals Hefflin took 6th place for a medal and ran a new school record 2:11.12, breaking the 1981 record set by Barbara Gottlieb of 2:11.64.   Hefflin’s time is #58 in the U.S.

Boys 4X100m Relay State Finals: (1) Long Beach Poly 41.13, (2) Rio Mesa 41.15, (3) Crenshaw 41.34, (4) Rodriguez San Jose 41.40, (5) Beverly Hills 41.76, (6) Grant San Jose 42.05, (7) Notre Dame 42.09, (8) Centennial 42.10, (9) Taft 42.11

Girls 800m State Finals:  (1) Amy Weissenbach-Harvard Westlake 2:07.52, (2) Savannah Camacho-Templeton 2:07.73, (3) Tiffany LaMar-Paramount 2:10.10, (4) Arielle Stevenson-Long Beach Poly 2:10.27, (5) Paisley Pettway-Millikan 2:10.34, (6) Raquel Hefflin-Beverly Hills 2:11.12, (7) Dynasty Gammage-Long Beach Poly 2:11.44, (8) Jaye Buchbinder-Chadwick 2:16.43, (9) Jenna Davis-Valley Christian 2:21.81.

The boys scored 4 points at State to put them in a 8 way tie for 48th in the team scoring.  Hefflin for the girls scored 3 points to put Beverly in a 9 way tie for 56th in the team scoring.

CIF SS MASTERS MEET

A day of high emotions and low emotions.    The day started with our Boys 4X100m Relay team of Kenny Bassett, Julian Sarokin, Trevor Walters and Cameron Countryman taking fourth place in the CIF Masters Meet in a new school record 41.52.  That qualified the team for the CIF STATE Meet.  In 1st was Long Beach Poly (#4 in the U.S.) running 40.78, followed in 2nd by Rio Mesa (#3 in the U.S.) in 40.97, and Notre Dame (#15 in the U.S.) in third in 41.26.  Beverly’s time of 41.52 now ranks them in a tie for #36 in the U.S.  Right now going into State they will be ranked 7th, behind Long Beach Poly, Rio Mesa, Notre Dame, Dorsey (41.01) and Crenshaw (41.13) and Jesuit San Jose (41.49).  Sarokin then was in the fast 100m dash race, where he did not get his usual fast start and finished in 7th place in 10.75—-five hundredth’s of a second from qualifying for the CIF STATE Meet that required a 10.70 clocking.   The next race was the Girls 800m race where Raquel Hefflin came around the first lap in last place, but then slowly she started her move —and in a flurry she finished in 7th place in 2:12.26 to qualify for the CIF STATE meet.  The Girls 800m was considered the most talented field of all the events as 11 of the 12 girls met the State qualifying time of 2:13.96.  That means Hefflin will still have a shot at breaking Beverly’s school record of 2:11.64 at the State Meet.   She is currently ranked #53 in the U.S.   In the triple jump, Kemi Olonade who is ranked #27 in the U.S. with a leap of 39-1, just never got her steps or jumps together the entire competition.  She could only muster a 36-5 1/4 jump which placed her in 11th place, nowhere near her best and was unable to qualify for State.

Awards Banquet:  Jodie Raffi won the Scholar Athlete Award with a 4.33+ GPA.  Julian Sarokin, Kemi Olonade, & Raquel Hefflin won the Outstanding Athletes of the Year, Kenny Bassett and Sydney Gray won MVP,

and Sydney Segal and Lily Ting were Rookies of the Year.  Coach Chuck Kloes was honored for 45 yrs with the track & field program at Beverly.

CIF SS DIVISION ll FINALS:

RAQUEL HEFFLIN 2nd in GIRLS 800m in 2:12.06

KEMI OLONADE 2nd in GIRLS Triple Jump in 37-5 1/2

JULIAN SAROKIN 2nd in Boys 100m in 10.69

BOYS 4X100m Relay 3rd in 42.26

Beverly had 4 qualifications into the CIF SS Division II Finals, and all 4 qualified to the CIF Masters Meet!   Raquel “Rocky” Hefflin took second place in the Girls 800m finals running 2:12.06, behind top ranked Chloe Curtis of Redondo Union HS.  This is her 3rd straight year as All CIF in the 800m.   Teammate Kemi Olonade finished 2nd in the Girls Triple Jump with a leap of 37-5 1/2, behind her arch rival Olympia Jewett of Culver City.  This is her 2nd straight year as All CIF in the triple jump.

Julian Sarokin took 2nd in the Boys 100m in 10.69, behind top ranked Jamison Jordan of Rio Mesa. Sarokin was also part of the Boys 4X100m Relay team with Cameron Countryman, Trevor Walters and Kenny Bassett that took 3rd place behind Rio Mesa HS and Damien HS.  The only other times the boys sprint relay teams made it this far was way back in 1942, 1944, 1945 and 1948.  On May 28, 2010 the CIF Masters will be held at Cerritos College, where the top 5 finishers in each event will automatically qualify for the CIF STATE Meet.  Those that finish 6th through 9th can also qualify for STATE if their performance meets the STATE standard.  All of our Beverly athletes have met the STATE standard, but they need to finish in the top 5 or equal their prior performances that meet the STATE standard to move on to STATE. Beverly has not qualified in any event to STATE since 1998.   The girls garnered 16 points as a team for a tie in 18th place, while the boys had 14 points as a team for a tie in 15th place.

CIF SS DIVISION ll PRELIMS:

BEVERLY HAS 4 QUALIFICATIONS FOR CIF DIVISION II FINALS!

JULIAN SAROKIN WINS PRELIMS IN 100m (#2 overall at CIF) IN SCHOOL RECORD 10.63!

BOYS 4X100m RELAY WINS PRELIMS (#2 overall at CIF) IN SCHOOL RECORD 41.96!

KEMI OLONADE #2 OVERALL AT CIF IN TRIPLE JUMP 38-01/2

RAQUEL HEFFLIN #2 IN PRELIM HEAT – QUALIFIES FOR 800m FINALS 3RD STRAIGHT YEAR IN 2:14.53.

Julian Sarokin won his  Boys 100m heat in a runaway with a new school record 10.63 (a top 5 time in State).  Only top ranked Jamison Jordan of Rio Mesa HS ran faster in 10.50.  However, the showdown won’t be restricted to the dash event, as Rio Mesa’s #1 in State and #2 US ranked 4X100 Relay team won its heat in 41.38, while Beverly’s quartet of Julian Sarokin, Kenny Bassett, Trevor Walters & Cameron Countryman (photo above) won their heat in 41.96 (one of the top times in State), leaving both teams as the only ones breaking the 42.0 barrier.  The 41.96 shattered the Beverly school record of 42.71 set back in 1983.  The girls were not to be outdone. Kemi Olonade qualified for the Girls triple jump for the 2nd straight year (she finished in 4th place last year).  This year at the prelims she finished in 2nd overall to her arch nemesis Olympia Jewett of cross town rival Culver City.  The finals next week will pit the two once again —this time the winner claiming to be the CIF Champion.  Raquel “Rocky” Hefflin still nursing a sore leg finished 2nd in her 800m heat in 2:14.53 to make the finals for her 3rd straight year.  As a sophomore she took 7th in the finals.  Last year she took 5th in the finals.  This her senior year she looks for a top finish.

ALMOST:   Two of our girls just missed making the CIF Finals.  Asia Williams in the long jump and Sydney Gray in the 800m.  Williams took 10th (top 9 make it to the finals) in 16-10 3/4, just 3/4 inch from qualifying!  It was a personal best and #9 all time at Beverly.  She is designated as an alternate, if one of the top 9 girls scratch from the event.  Sydney Gray found herself in the same heat as Rocky Hefflin, and she finished in 4th place in a personal best 2:18.39.  She missed making the finals by 1.37 seconds.   Her time places her #5 all time at Beverly.

OF NOTE:   Sophomore Brianna Simmons took a respectable 5th place in her heat of the 800m in a personal best 2:21.39.  That is #8 all time varsity and #4 all time on the frosh soph list at Beverly.   What can you say about freshman sensation Sydney Segal.  She might not have placed high at the prelims, but she ran very impressive times for a freshman.  In the 1600m her time of 5:25.36 is #9 all time on the varsity list and is #3 all time on the frosh soph list at Beverly.  If that was not enough, she also ran the 3200m in 11:50.30, which is #4 all time on varsity, and #2 all time on the frosh soph list for the event at Beverly.

BHHS v. Culver City Dual Meet -April 22, 2010

IT CAME DOWN TO LAST EVENT, BUT………….

BEVERLY WINS OCEAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

Both Beverly and Culver City came in as the only two teams in league to be undefeated.   The meet progressed where both the boys and girls varsity were neck and neck with the score.  With only two events, the 3200m and 4X400 relays left, something had to give.  The girls needed to sweep 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 3200m in order to assure themselves at least a tie for the league championship if they were to lose the relay.  The boys needed a 1st and 2nd place finish in the 3200m to assure themselves at least a tie for the league championship if they were to lose the relay.  The girls team scrambled as they only had two varsity runners in the 3200m race, Gitla Shooster and Danielle Vinoles.  So Sydney Gray who had already won the 800m and 1600m and was to run in the 4X400 relay jumped in to secure third place for the sweep needed.  In the boys 3200m Josh Galen took 1st and it appeared Culver’s runner was assured 2nd place, but out of nowhere in the final 160 meters Nick Harper came to secure the 2nd place needed.  So it all came down to the 4X400 relays.  The girls team with Dejah McCoy, Sydney Gray (just having finished the 3200m run), Brianna Simmons and Briana Prince battled Culver lap after lap, with Prince holding off Culver City at the finish line to claim the league championship outright.  Then it was the boys turn, with Zach Gallagher, Cameron Countryman, Kenny Bassett and Mario Conti.  In a repeat of the girls race, Culver and Beverly runners were stride for stride and Conti on the anchor leg held off Culver, securing victory and the league championship.   Final scores for the varsity boys and girls were identical 73-63 over Culver.  Our Boys frosh soph won the league championship easily 107-20 as did the girls frosh-soph 86-23.

It should be noted that the girls varsity were missing Raquel Hefflin and Kiarra Brown, while the boys were missing Parsa Peykar and Trevor Walters.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MEET:     BOYS:  There were a number of performances that stood out.  The boys varsity 100m was swept by Beverly with Julian Sarokin taking 1st in 10.6 and Cameron Countryman in 2nd and Kenny Bassett in third both at 10.8.  Mario Conti took 2nd in the 400m in 50.8 an excellent time.  Donovan Dickens ran a personal best in the 110mH in 15.0, as did Marcus Silberger in 2nd in 15.2. The boys 4X400m relay ran an excellent 3:24.3.   Josh Galen won the 3200m in 10:47.30.  On the frosh soph side, Willie Green continues his jumping through the roof as he took 1st in the high jump in 6-2.  He also took 2nd in the 400m in 53.6, while Joel Steinberg won in 52.9.  Ariel Nasib won the 100m in 11.5.  Jeraud Williams won the shot put in 42-9 1/2 and the discus in 103-0.

GIRLS:  On the Varsity side Asia Williams won the 100m in 12.5.  Kemi Olonade won the triple jump in 36-3 and 2nd in the long jump at 16-2.  Sydney Gray won the 800m in 2:26.0 and 1600m in 5:33.7.  Brianna Simmons was in 2nd place behind Gray in both events in 2:26.3 and 5:33.8.   Marissa Wells ran 3rd in the 800m in 2:30.9.    On the girls frosh soph Sidney Segal ran a great 1600m winning in 5:48.1.  Lilly Ting won the 400m in 63.1 and the 800m in 2:33.1.   Vanessa Torres won both the 100m and 200m in 13.2 and 28.3 respectively.  Faith France took 2nd in the 300mH in a personal best 54.4.

MT SAC RELAYS  April 16-17, 2010

ITS ALL KEMISTRY AS OLONADE TAKES 1ST IN TRIPLE JUMP -  39-1 !!!!

Kemi Olonade once again destroyed her own school record in the girls triple jump leaping 39-1, taking 1st place in the invitational triple jump at MT SAC, and moved up to the #4 ranked legal jump in State and places her in the top 20 in the U.S.  She also took second place in the long jump at 16-11 1/4.

The girls 800m race which had many of the top 800m runners in State, saw Sydney Gray take 14th place in a fast 2:18.88 (becoming only the 5th girl @ Beverly to break the 2:20 barrier).  The girls 4X800m relay of Briana Prince (2:28.80), Sydney Gray (2:23.83), Lilly Ting (2:29.78) & Brianna Simmons (2:25.40) broke the school record for the third time this year running 9:47.81 without star 800m runner Rocky Hefflin.  The girls 4X100 relay saw Asia Williams bolt out with a fast first leg to take the lead, with Briana Prince and Dejah McCoy keeping the lead, and Kiarra Brown at the anchor leg stretched the lead over the pack to finish in 1st place in 50.09, a season’s best.  With some competition they will more than likely run under 50 seconds.

Boys win 4X200 Relay @ MT SAC and nearly break school record in 4X100

The boys in the 4X200 relay (Zach Gallagher, Cameron Countryman, Kenny Bassett & Julian Sarokin) in their seeded heat had very little competition and won easily in 1:30.67, third overall in the seeded heats.  The boys team in the 4X100m with Cameron Countryman, Kenny Bassett and Julian Sarokin building a lead into the last leg where Parsa Peykar was in the lead with 10 meters to go when he pulled his hamstring as 3 teams passed Beverly and the relay team finished in 4th in 43.33.  The winner Redlands ran 42.79, and it appeared the team would have run close to the school record of 42.71 had Peykar not pulled.  However, there will be other chances this season to go for the school record.

Julian Sarokin took 5th in the 200m invitational running a personal best 22.24 and moves him up to a tie for #8 all time at Beverly for the event.

Arcadia Invite April 9-10, 2010

GIRLS DYNAMIC DUO “ROCKY” HEFFLIN & KEMI OLONADE

Hefflin runs 2:13.37 in 800m – #7 in State, #14 in U.S.

Olonade triple jumps 38-4 1/2 – #6 in State, #31 in U.S. (school record)

BOYS 4X200m sets school record in 1:28.41 – #8 in State, #30 in U.S.

FRIDAY THE FIRST DAY

The renowned Arcadia Invite brings the best U.S. and foreign high school athletes for a 2 day meet.  After last weeks Texas Relays, and races across the country, our rankings appeared to diminish.  Then on Friday the first day of the Arcadia meet our star runner Raquel Hefflin did not run in any of the relays due to a sore leg.  That left Sydney Gray (800m leg in 2:22.75), Kiarra Brown (400m leg in 60.80), Asia Williams and Dejah McCoy each running the 200m legs to step up to the task.  They took 6th place in the invitational 1600m Sprint Medley in 4:18.30, respectable but off our best time of 4:11.93, where our ranking is now #6 in State and #24 in the U.S.  The absence of Hefflin and Brianna Simmons also left Sydney Gray, Briana Prince, Lilly Ting and Gitla Shooster to run the 4X800m relay without two of our best 800m runners, but they still managed to break the school record running 9:52.52 behind Sydney Gray’s 2:21.67 (#8 all time at Beverly).  However, the Friday highlight was the boys 4X200m relay of Kenny Bassett, Trevor Walters, Mario Conti & Julian Sarokin who demolished the school’s 49 year old record of 1:30.30 set in 1961 —by running 1:28.41 taking 3rd in the seeded race, which time is #8 in the State and #30 in the U.S.

SATURDAY THE SECOND DAY

What can you say about Beverly’s dynamic duo of Raquel Hefflin and Kemi Olonade. The day started with Olonade taking first in the open triple jump leaping a new school record of 38-4 1/2.

That is #6 in State and #31 in the U.S.  Not to be outdone, Hefflin who was out on Friday due to a sore leg, then in the seeded 800m race came from the back of the pack, made a late move, passing everyone but Tiffany Lamar of Paramount, losing by a few tenths of a second running a personal best 2:13.37— #7 in State and #14 in the U.S.  (incredibly she is only #3 all time at Beverly but challenging Beverly’s past All Americans Cynthia Warner (1977) at 2:11.80 and school record holder Barbara Gottlieb (1981) at 2:11.64).  In other events we did not fair as well, as our Girls 4X400m relay took 5th in their heat and 18th overall in a time of 4:05.32—off our best this year of 3:57.93—which now is #12 in the State and #66 in the U.S.   Our Girls 4X100m relay ran a 51.08, off their best mark this year of 50.44.  Camyar Meshkaty had an off day in the boys shot put at 43-5 1/2.

CULVER CITY RELAYS – BIG DAY FOR NORMANS!  MARCH 20, 2010 @ CULVER CITY HS

That also puts them at #4 in the nation!  WOW!  Hefflin in the 800m is ranked #5 in State.  Then Raquel Hefflin, Sydney Gray, Kiarra Brown and Brianna Simmons took 2nd in the 4X400m Relay to powerhouse St. Mary’s– clocking a time of 3:57.93, which is #7 all time at Beverly and is #7 in the State of California.  Then Sydney Gray, Raquel Hefflin, Brianna Simmons and Briana Prince in the 4X800m relay won by over 45 seconds in a new school record 9:52.60, which is in the top 15 in the State of California.  Not to be outdone the boys varsity quartet of Kenny Bassett, Trevor Walters, Mario Conti and Julian Sarokin in the boys 4X200m relay were battling Diamond Ranch to the finish, as the team won in 1:30.43 to 1:31.41.  Their time just missed the school record of 1:30.30 by .13 of a second, but their time is #9 in the State of California.  These 4 relays seemed to overshadow some of Beverly’s other performances.  Julian Sarokin won the boys varsity 100m in 11.02 (#6 all time at Beverly).  Camyar Meshkaty won the shot put in 52-0 and took 2nd in the discus in 117-9.  Julian Jackson as a sophomore surprised everyone taking 3rd in the varsity shot put in 49-8 1/2 to make the Varsity all time list at #24, but more importantly it is #3 all time on the Frosh-Soph list!  Then in various relays the girls 800m times were sensational:  Rocky Hefflin ran 2:16.45 and 2:23.35, Brianna Simmons ran 2:27.00, Sydney Gray ran 2:28.54, Lily Ting ran 2:32.15 as a freshman, Briana Prince ran 2:32.58 and Marissa Wells ran 2:36.49.  Then Donovan Dickens took 3rd in the 110mH in a personal best 15.52, and Martin Cadres took 4th in the 300mH in 45.94, while Frank Brown took 4th in the FS 300mH in 45.45. Liza Raffi won the girls frosh soph 100mH in 17.86.  That moved her into #32 all time on the varsity and #14 all time on the frosh-soph.  More unusual is that this may be the first time we have 3 members of the same family on a varsity all time list at the school—as she joins her sisters Tara and Jodi.   Ariel Nasib took 3rd in the boys frosh-soph 100m in 11.89.  The boys frosh-soph 4X100m took 3rd in 46.43.  The boys frosh-soph 4X400m took 2nd in 3:46.64 with a good leg by W. March 13, 2010 @ Irvine HS

Billed as one of the prestigious meets of the year, the Irvine Invite gathered many of the best track and field athletes in southern California.  Unfortunately, the headwinds effected the performances especially the sprints and hurdles.  Despite those conditions, state ranked “Rocky” Hefflin ran a spectacular 800m in 2:16.74 against a stellar field.  She looks poised to take on the school record of 2:11.64 set in 1981 by Barbara Gottlieb.  Our other state ranked athlete Kemi Olonade took 2nd in the girls varsity triple jump in 36-3, but barely fouled on jump that soared over 38 feet.  She also finished 9th in the girls 110mH in 17.15.  Julian Sarokin continues to show his speed taking 3rd in the boys varsity 100m in 11.32.   Camyar Meshkaty took 5th in the boys varsity shot put in 51-8 1/2.

BEVERLY LOSES TO MIRA COSTA; BUT GIRLS VARSITY PUTS UP STRONG BATTLE

March 11, 2010 @ BHHS

One of the strongest teams in the southland Mira Costa defeated Beverly at all levels handily, but the girls varsity team performed well losing by a score of 72-57.

Highlights:   Rocky Hefflin led the way by taking the 1600m in 5:25.00, with Brianna Simmons in 2nd at 5:34.00.  Sydney Gray took the 400m in 61.8  and third in the 3200m in 12:12.30.  Kiarra Brown ran an excellent 100m/200m double in 12.9 and 26.7 barely losing to Mira Costa’s Ashlee Dotson.  Asia Williams was 3rd in the 100m in 12.9.  Briana Prince won the 800m in her first time running the race in 2:33.7.  Kemi Olonade took 1st in both the long jump and triple jump and took 2nd in the 100mH in 16.2.  On the boys varsity—Julian Sarokin once again won the double sprints of 100m/200m in 11.0 and an excellent 22.1.  Mario Conti ran a personal best 400m in 51.2.  In the hurdles Donovan Dickens took 2nd the 110mH/300mH double in a fine 15.3 and 42.7 running with winner Michael Koger, Mira Costa’s top ranked hurdler.  Camyar Meshkaty took 2nd in the shot put in 48-1. BEVERLY SHINES IN RAIN AT GAHR RELAYS

Girls Varsity sets school record in 4X1600m relay

Girls Varsity jumpers dominate

March 6, 2010 @ Gahr HS (electronic times)

On a rainy, windy, and cold day with a track as hard as pavement, the competition and performances at the Gahr Relays were less than ideal, but the Beverly team performed admirably in a competition with numerous high schools from the Southland—Upland, Cypress, South Hills, Loara, Marymount, Millikan, Lincoln, Artesia, Yorba Linda, Gahr, Venice, etc.  The team was led by the girl jumpers, girl distance squad, and boy hurdlers.

Girls Distance:  The Girls Varsity team of Raquel Hefflin, Sydney Grey, Brianna Simmons and Gitla Shooster set a new school record for the 4X1600m Relay in a time of 22:52.20 in taking first place.  Then the Girls Varsity team of Raquel Hefflin, Sydney Grey, Brianna Simmons and Briana Prince took first in the Distance Medley in a time of 13:17.98 (third fastest all time at Beverly).  Hefflin’s split for the 1600m was 5:29.11.   Then our girls frosh soph team of Lilly Ting, Jessica Robert, Sydney Segal and Ashley Bootesaz took first in the 4X800m in a time of 11:01.17 (probably the fastest frosh soph time for the event at Beverly).  Then Lilly Ting, Jessica Robert, Sydney Segal and Marissa Rothman took second in the Distance Medley in a time of 14:34.20.

Girls Jumpers:   The school is fortunate that it has 3 girl jumpers on the Beverly all time list at the same time, Kemi Olonade, Asia Williams and Dejah McCoy.  As a team they won both the long jump (total 45-9) and triple jump (total 97-7 1/2) competition.  Olonade’s triple jump of 36 feet was the highlight.

Boys Hurdlers:  The boys hurdlers have an outstanding team this year with Donovan Dickens, Marcus Silberger, Martin Cadres and Daniel Bradbury—as they easily won the Boys Varsity shuttle hurdles event in a time of 1:07.17, which time was not official due to the fact that not enough hurdles were set up for the race.  Otherwise their time would have made the all time list at Beverly.

Other performances:   The girls varsity 4X400m Relay took first place in a time of 4:17.70 (with Raquel Hefflin running the fastest leg in 61.94).  The mixed 4X200m Relay consisting of two boys Cameron Countryman and Joel Steinberg and two girls Kiarra Brown and Asia Williams took first place in a time of 1:43.90.  The frosh-soph girls won the 4X200m Relay in a time of 1:58.34.  The girls varsity 4X100m Relay took second  in a time of 53.39.  The mixed 4X800m team took second in a time of 10:05.01.  The girls varsity sprint medley took third place in a time of 5:19.48.  The boys frosh-soph 4X800m Relay took fifth in a time of 9:58.82. The boys frosh soph distance medley took seventh place in a time of 13:01.29.  In the girls frosh-soph 4X400m Beverly entered two teams which took second and third places.  The boys distance medley relay of Josh Galen, Mario Conti, Nick Harper and Ali Hatcher took sixth place in a time of 11:45.18, moving up to tenth on the Beverly all time list.  The disappointing result was the boys 4X400m Relay of Cameron Countryman, Mario Conti, Nick Harper and Joel Steinberg who were battling it out with Upland high school to a photo finish, well ahead of all other teams, and it appeared that Beverly won—but the officials disqualified both Beverly for running out of lane and Upland for elbowing the Beverly runner–so neither team medaled.

OLONADE & HEFFLIN LISTED AS PRE-SEASON STATE CONTENDERS

DyestatCal.com has come out with it’s pre-season prediction of contenders to make the State Meet.  DyestatCal listed a first team, second team and third team, comprising together the top 25 to 30 contenders in the State for each event.  Kemi Olonade, the school record holder in the girls triple jump with a leap of 37-7 last year, was listed on the second team.  Her rival in league, Olympia Jewitt of Culver City was on the first team. That should make for some firework competition between two State contenders in the same league.   Raquel Hefflin was listed on the third team for the 800 meters.  However, the list did not consider that after the State meet last year, Hefflin at the Junior Olympics ran a time of 2:14.33, which would probably put her on the second team of contenders. The first meet of the year is against Redondo, whose top runner for the girls is Chloe Curtis who is ranked No. 1 in State for the 1600 meters and on the first team for the 800 meters.  Our second meet is against Mira Costa and North Torrance.  Both the Mira Costa and Redondo girls are strong in the middle and long distance races.  The girls varsity have won the Ocean League championship the last two years, while the boys varsity won last year, so both teams look to repeat.  The biggest challenges will come from Santa Monica and Culver City high schools.

Historical Flashback

With the 2010 track season approaching we need to recognize those Beverly athletes of the past by acknowledging anniversaries of their achievements and their legacies to the history of the program.  So here is a historical anniversary flashback for the 2010 season:

70 YEAR ANNIVERSARY -  BOB ULLMAN

Seventy years ago in 1940 Bob Ullman ran the 220 yds hurdles in 24.9, which was one of the fastest times in the State and garnered him High School All American honors.  Considered one of the all time great hurdlers in Beverly’s history.
