AWARDS BANQUET:
ERICA HENDRY IS SCHOLAR ATHLETE
BRIANNA SIMMONS – GIRLS VARSITY MVP
JOSH GALEN – BOYS VARSITY MVP [PHOTOS on Photo Link]
The Awards Banquet for XC 2010 had many memorable moments. Senior Erica Hendry won the prestigious Scholar Athlete Award with a cumulative GPA of 4.67. As expected Brianna Simmons won the Girls Varsity MVP and certificates for setting 4 school records. Josh Galen was the Boys Varsity MVP. Senior Nick Harper received a certificate for setting 1 school record. Aaron Wolfe was boys freshman MVP and Da Eun Lee was the Girls JV MVP. Coach Fedley Bonneau gave an inspirational speech warning our athletes not to fall into mediocrity or be complacent or to rest on our laurels and vowed that our team would work that much harder to be that much better. He gave out for the first time in our program a “two by four” piece of wood colored orange as a symbol of the pain one has to endure to be a better runner (no pain, no gain) and it was awarded to Senior Natashe Gerente, who had a foot stress fracture this year and endured the pain. Head Coach Jeff Fisher was praised for the excellent job he did with the team and he created a special slideshow of photos of our team this year that everyone enjoyed thoroughly. In the slide show there was a poem written by boys freshman all league runner Ryouma Kawamata, which is set forth below. As always there was too much food. Special thanks to the parents who supported the team this year. Jessica Robert, who was the Girls Varsity Rookie of the Year, still is too shy to let everyone know that her last name is not the english Robert, but the french Robert (pronounced “Row-Bear”). Here are the awards given out at the banquet:

POEM:
Together We Can… Accomplish
by Ryouma Kawamata
Together we can feel proud like the first time you rode a bike.
Together we can feel embarrassed like the first time you swung a strike.
We can all achieve great things as a team.
We can all leave a legacy and act as if it was all a dream.
Everyone can cross the finish line with a smile.
Everyone can run a race that others will remember for a while.
No one can suddenly reach perfection.
No one can accomplish without a certain perception.
Someone can continue to run passionately on a race track.
Someone can make mistakes and learn if they trace back.
Anyone can fly like a bird over a hurdle.
Anyone can slack off and slow down like a turtle.
Every team has a chance of winning a trophy.
Every team has a chance of improving slowly.
People know the sky could be frowning or smiling.
People know problems must be solved before they start piling.
Many understand that a race course could be muddy or sandy.
Many understand that athletes eat fruits instead of candies.
Together we can learn that being disciplined is better than to regret.
Together we can learn that a loss could bring tons of distress.
Together we can advance to a CIF tournament while we’re young.
Together we can discover that running could feel like a bullet to the lung.
Together we can run a meet with a lot of will.
Together we can run as fast as a tiger and rise on top of a hill.
Together we can run rapidly and rank top five places.
Together we can get on the bus with a smile on our faces.
CIF FINALS @ MT SAC 11-20-2010, 3.1 Mile Rain Course
BRIANNA SIMMONS TAKES 23rd at CIF FINALS
It turned out to be a rainy day for the CIF Finals at MT SAC, so the longer 3.1 mile rain course was utilized, but it was still a rainy sloshy day. Brianna Simmons our only runner in the finals was in the featured race of the day and in the toughest race of the day, the CIF Division II girls race that had all the top 8 teams ranked in State in the race, of which 5 of those teams are ranked in the United States, and has been hailed by ESPN Dyestat as the toughest sectional race in the entire U.S. With that in mind, Simmons ran a fine race battling it out for 20th place, the last place to qualify for the State Meet, but came up short as she finished in 23rd place in a time of 19:06—-the 20th place finisher in 19:05 was just 1 second ahead of Simmons. The race had the top 16 teams in division II and 119 runners. Simmons is the first girl to run in the CIF Finals since 1980, thirty years ago, and as a junior she still has next year. A great season for her in CIF competition, as she was the Ocean League Champion and set 4 school records in cross country.
CIF PRELIMS @ MT SAC 11-13-2010 [Photos on Photo Link @ upper left]
BRIANNA SIMMONS QUALIFIES FOR CIF FINALS!
GIRLS VARSITY MISS CIF FINALS BY ONE PLACE
GIRLS VARSITY: With the top teams from the various leagues in CIF Southern Section at the CIF Prelims— 4 heats were run with 13-14 schools in each heat with apx 100 runners in each heat. The top 4 teams qualified for the CIF Finals and the top 6 individuals qualified for the CIF Finals. The CIF Southern Section Division 2 is one of the toughest sections in the U.S. with national and state ranked teams. Beverly’s Varsity Girls were in a tough heat that included 1st place team Mira Costa (#2 in State and #5 in U.S.), 2nd place team Sultana (#7 in State) and 3rd place team Camarillo (#11 in State) as well as the top teams in the CIF Southern Section of Claremont and Beaumont. Beverly showed that it was a team to be reckoned with as it ran with these top tiered teams as it took 5th place, one place short of qualifying for the finals, just behind Claremont in 4th place and ahead of Beaumont in 6th place. A respectable showing by the Girls Varsity (which ranks them in the top 20 in the CIF division 2), and who were led by junior Brianna Simmons who took 5th place individually that qualified her for the CIF Finals. The last cross country runner at Beverly to qualify for the CIF Finals was Noah Smith in 2001. Her time of 18:37 (not her best which is her school record 18:29 on the course) was tied for the 14th best time of the day in all Division 2 heats. To qualify for State she will need to be among the top 5 individuals in the top 20 finishers who are not members of the top 7 teams that qualify for State. Seems a bit complicated, but most of the girls ahead of Simmons are already on teams that will more than likely qualify for State so she has a good shot at making the State Meet. Sydney Gray in only her 3rd race of the year took 23rd in 19:58 (#4 all time for Beverly on the course and only the 4th girl at Beverly to break 20 minutes for the course). Jessica Robert had a break-out race taking 36th in 20:52; Lily Ting came in in 40th in 20:55; followed by Erica Hendry in 53rd in 21:41; Ashley Bootesaz in 55th in 21:48 and Marissa Rothman in 57th in 21:54. All our varsity girls this year made the Beverly all time list for the MT SAC course.
BOYS VARSITY: The Boys Varsity took 10th place in their heat won by Camarillo –the boys #3 team in State. The highlight for Beverly was Josh Galen’s 33rd place finish in 16:30 (#10 all time at Beverly for the MT SAC course). Galen was followed by Nick Harper in 51st place in 17:05 (just missing the all time list by 6 seconds); Eli Flesch in 56th place in 17:19; Andrew Redston in 62nd place in 17:26; and Chanan Batra in 66th in 17:33. Our usual runners on Varsity Sam Capogrosso and Alex Rohani did not run so our alternates were from the Freshman Team—-Aaron Wolfe who took 86th in 18:32 and Michael Redston in 93rd in 18:56.
Ocean League: Beverly’s arch rival Santa Monica High School did not fair well at CIF as their boys took 15th place (last in their heat) and their top finisher was 72nd in 17:55. The Santa Monica girls took 9th in their heat with their top girls taking 47th place and 48th place in 20:36 and 20:41. The Culver City High School boys and girls took last in their heats.
Ocean League Finals @ Rancho Park – November 4, 2010
GIRLS VARSITY WIN 6th STRAIGHT LEAGUE TITLE!
Brianna Simmons & Sydney Gray take 1-2 for Girls Varsity
Boys Varsity takes 2nd to SAMO as Josh Galen takes 2nd in league
Boys Freshman win league with first 5 places led by Aaron Wolfe
In the extreme heat with the temperature around 98 degrees, the Ocean League Finals were held at Beverly’s home course at Rancho Park, which saw some fainting spells and breathing issues from the runners as they traversed the 3 mile course in nearby Cheviot Hills. Both the Girls Varsity and Boys Varsity qualified for the CIF Prelims.
Girls Varsity: The Girls Varsity won their 6th straight league championship, a streak that began in 2005. As expected the battle between Beverly and Santa Monica was to be a close match, but our girls in the end won 24 to 31. Culver City took third place. Brianna Simmons of Beverly took 1st place as the individual league champion in a time of 18:26.22, the second fastest time for the course behind school record holder Barbara Gottlieb who in 1981 set the school record at 18:19. Simmons was just unbeatable this year in league and she is only a junior. What can you say about Beverly’s senior runner Sydney Gray, injured the entire season, but who comes back in only her second race of the year to take 2nd place in the league finals running 19:21.48 (the 8th fastest time ever over the course) and she becomes only the third cross-country runner ever in Beverly’s history to be Varsity All League for 4 years in a row! However, it should be noted that the big reason the Beverly girl’s took the title was the important 5th and 6th place finishes by Ashley Bootesaz and Erica Hendry in 20:30.03 and 20:35.00 (both making the exclusive all time list at Beverly for the course). Marissa Rothman took an excellent 10th in 21:13.49. Both Lily Ting (13th in 22:17.37) and Jessica Robert (15th in 23:04.11) had off-days.
Boys Varsity: The Boys Varsity began the race with the possibility of perhaps taking the league title away from arch rival Santa Monica High School, but SAMO pulled away in the last mile of the race to take the victory, with Beverly taking 2nd in league, Culver City taking 3rd and Morningside taking 4th. The highlight of the race was the battle between SAMO’s Nick Salazar and Beverly’s Josh Galen as they ran stride for stride over the 3 mile course, with Salazar pulling away at the finish to win over Galen by 2 seconds, as both runners ran under 16:20 (16:17.22 to 16:19.90). Galen was the only boy runner for Beverly who made the All Time List for the course. Sophomore Chanan Batra ran an excellent race taking 4th place in 16:31.27, while senior Nick Harper took 6th place in 16:54.22. Eli Flesch took 10th in 17:26.55; Sam Capogrosso took 12th in 17:37.51; Andrew Redston took 13th in 17:58.18 and Alexander Rohani took 14th in 18:05.48.
Boys Freshman: All year the Boys Freshman team has dominated races and placed high at invitationals, that it was no surprise that they took the league title. What was surprising was that Beverly took the first five places in the race! Led by Aaron Wolfe as the individual league champion in a great time of 17:58.71 (the only runner in the race to break 18 minutes), and followed by Michael Redston in 2nd in 18:26.55, Ryouma Kawamata in 3rd in 18:35.41, Sam Levy in 4th in 18:49.47 and Hans Tercek in 5th in 18:51.29—-no other team had runners under 19 minutes, as Beverly won the title with only 15 points (the lowest score a team can obtain in a cross country meet).
Boys & Girls JV: Both the Boys and Girls Junior Varsity teams took 2nd in League behind Santa Monica. The Boys JV had three boys in the top 10; Zachary Fouladian in 5th in 18:42.42, Matthew Lieb in 7th in 19:07.98 and Joel Steinberg in 10th in 19:18.11. The Girls JV had two girls in the top 10; Genevieve Javidazad in 7th in 23:04.20 and Da Eun Lee in 8th in 23:22.67.
MT SAC INVITE 2010 – October 23, 2010
BRIANNA SIMMONS TAKES 1ST @ MT SAC INVITE
IN NEW SCHOOL RECORD: 18:29 !
Billed as the largest high school cross country meet in the nation, with 23,000 runners and over 500 teams with some of the top teams in the State and Nation, with many of the top high school runners from around the country, the times this year were very fast for the hilly MT SAC course. With so many teams and runners numerous heats are run over 2 days. The girls varsity in their heat was led by Brianna Simmons who captured first place in a time of 18:29 setting a new school record for the course (and breaking the old record of 18:48 set last year by Raquel Hefflin). After missing the entire season with an injury, Sydney Gray returned for her very first race of the season, coming in as our second girl in 28th place in a time of 20:05. Obviously she is capable of much faster times, but her return marks a turning point for the team with the upcoming Ocean League Finals on November 4. The girls varsity arrived late for the race, as the gun went off and the field of runners took off, while our girls hadn’t even made the starting line; but they jumped into the race about 50-60 yards behind the field and started to make up ground. The team finished 5th out of 20 schools–with 152 runners in the race—even though they had to make up ground on the field, and amazingly all the girls made the Beverly all time list for the course (Ashley Bootesaz in 48th in 20:52, Erica Hendry in 49th in 20:53, Jessica Robert in 53rd in 21:04, Lily Ting in 54th in 21:05, and Marissa Rothman in 71st in 21:39). They will all have another shot at the course when they run in the CIF prelims. A number of our sophomore varsity boys runners ran in the sophomore race, where Chanan Batra took 10th place in 16:59 (making the Beverly all time list for the course); followed by Eli Flesch in 11th in 17:01, and Alex Rohani in 25th in 17:36. The sophomore boys took 6th place out of 29 teams and 196 runners. [Josh Galen still nursing an injury ran the course unofficially in around 17:00]. The boys frosh team took 5th place out of 26 teams and 171 runners, led by Aaron Wolfe in 8th place in 17:55, followed by Sam Levy in 40th in 19:08, Michael Redston in 51st in 19:35, Hans Tercek in 52nd in 19:36, Chad Yee in 67th in 20:02 and Ethan Kunin in 76th in 20:22. In the boys varsity race of 154 runners, Andrew Redston took 94th in 17:40. Our sophomore girls Da Eun Lee took 42nd in 23:49 and Sara Hendry took 56th in 24:50.
BRIANNA SIMMONS WINS OCEAN LEAGUE
CLUSTER MEET #2 IN SCHOOL RECORD &
COURSE RECORD AS GIRLS VARSITY DEFEATS SAMO IN SQUEAKER 27 to 28
10-14-2010 @ Kenneth Hahn Park – 3 Miles
Junior Brianna Simmons continues to amaze as she took first place in the 2nd Ocean League Cluster Meet, where she ran 19:52.05 setting not only a school record for the Kenneth Hahn 3 mile Course, but a Course Record, becoming the first girl ever to break the 20 minute barrier on a course many consider one of the toughest in the southland. The difference for the girls is that times at Kenneth Hahn are over 1 minute slower than the times run at the mighty MT SAC course. The girls varsity beat Santa Monica High School by one point 27-28. A great effort was put in by all the girls, as sophomore Lily Ting took 3rd in 20:50.32 (#3 all time at Beverly for the course), junior Ashley Bootesaz took 5th in 21:40.99 (making the all time list), senior Erica Hendry took 8th in 22:18.13, sophomore Marissa Rothman took 10th in 22:35.98 and sophomore Jessica Robert took 11th in 22:42.61. This only heightens the upcoming battle at league finals between Beverly and Samo for the league championship to be run at Beverly’s home course Rancho Park on November 4, 2010. In the boys varsity race both Beverly and Samo held out a number of their top runners due to minor injuries, as Samo defeated Beverly by a score of 25 to 35. However, two of our sophomore boys, Eli Flesch in third at 17:43.11 and Chanan Batra in 4th at 17:49.05 both made the Beverly all time list for the course. Freshman Aaron Wolfe, who usually leads our boys freshmen team, was moved up to Varsity where he took 11th place in 18:53.38. The boys freshmen held their ground winning the team race against Samo 26 to 33, led by Sam Levy in 2nd in a time of 20:05.70. Both the Boys and Girls JV teams took 2nd to Samo. Culver City, Morningside and Inglewood placed behind Beverly and SAMO in all the division races.

The Central Park Invite hosted by Fountain Valley H.S. saw over 40 schools in Division 2 and over 30 schools in Division 1. Beverly ran in the Division 2 races which saw apx. 150 runners in each race. There were many highlights for the Normans. Brianna Simmons in the Varsity girls race once again turned in an outstanding performance, taking 2nd place in 18:57 to Corinne Cherne of El Dorado H.S. who ran 18:45, the only two girls in the race that broke 19 minutes. Simmons time broke the school record held by Raquel Hefflin of 18:58 set last year. The girls varsity had 6 girls make the all time list, which garnered them a 5th place team trophy. Eli Flesch ran away with the sophomore boys race taking first place in a time of 17:36. Aaron Wolfe led the boys freshman team with a 4th place finish in 18:20, as the boys team took 2nd place behind Anaheim H.S. by a mere 5 points. NICK HARPER Sets Boys Varsity School Record for Brea-Olinda Invite Course @ Carbon Cyn Regional Park
After having competed at the South Bay Cup, a number of our runners sat out the Brea-Olinda Invite, a 3.1 mile race, so we basically had a skeleton crew. Races were run according to rank on each team. However, some of our boys varsity runners competed well to make the all time list for the course, including Nick Harper (38th in the seeded boys varsity race) whose 17:59 broke last year’s school record of 18:21 set by Ali Hatcher. A number of our other boys ran better than the old school record, including Eli Flesh in 18:13 (10th in the seeded boys frosh-soph race) and Sam Capagrosso in 18:18 (46th in the seeded boys varsity race). Chanan Batra also made the all time list running 18:27 (14th in the boys seeded frosh-soph race). Alex Rohani made his debut for the team running 19:41 (14th in the lower boys frosh-soph race). In the boys varsity middle seeded race Andrew Redston ran 19:12 (57th place) and Shiki Izuku ran 19:26 (66th place). On the girls side Lily Ting ran the fastest time of the day for the team 22:18 (27th in the girls varsity seeded race), while Ashley Bootesaz ran 22:33 (23rd in girls varsity middle seeded race), Melissa Rothman ran 23:04 (17th in the seeded frosh-soph race) and De Eun Lee ran 25:27 (26th in girls lower seeded frosh-soph race). The freshmen boys in the middle seeded boys frosh-soph race were led by Aaron Wolfe in 19:10 (16th place), Sam Levy in 20:48 (43rd place) and Hans Tercek in 20:49 (44th place).

BRIANNA SIMMONS TAKES 2nd @ SOUTH BAY CUP AGAINST STELLAR FIELD- SETTING A NEW SCHOOL RECORD
VARSITY GIRLS BEAT SAMO; 6 VARSITY GIRLS MAKE ALL TIME LIST
5 BOYS MAKE ALL TIME LIST; CHANAN BATRA TAKES 4th IN BOYS SOPH RACE
With top teams from the South Bay and surrounding areas the South Bay Cup as always was very competitive with ranked CIF teams competing such as Mira Costa, Redondo, Palos Verdes and West Torrance. Over 100 runners competed in each race. The Girls Varsity race was the biggest highlight for Beverly. From the very start of the Girls Varsity race junior Brianna Simmons went out in the lead with Jaye Buchbinder of Chadwick HS, one of the top runners in the State, ahead of perennial State power runners from Mira Costa HS, Savannah Pio and Aryn Foland. Pio won the Bay League XC 1st meet beating out the top girls from Redondo HS. The race came down to the wire as Buchbinder edged Simmons by one second. Pio and Foland took 3rd and 4th. Buchbinder and Simmons ran the fastest times of the day 17:37 and 17:38, the 7th and 8th fastest times all time for the meet and course. Simmons shattered the old Beverly school record for the course held by Valerie Wirtschafter of 19:43.46 set back in 2006. Five other varsity girls made the all time list for Beverly on the course: Lily Ting in 20th in 19:08; Erica Hendry in 33rd in 20:14; Ashley Bootesaz in 36th in 20:34; Jessica Robert in 37th in 20:42; and Marissa Rothman in 39th in 20:43. After having lost to Santa Monica HS in the first Ocean League Meet this year, Beverly as a team finished 5th in the race ahead of SAMO which finished 7th as a team.
On the boys side Chanan Batra took 4th in the Boys Sophomore race in 16:30.1, while Eli Flesh took 11th in 16:47.5, both making the Beverly all time list for the course. In the Boys Varsity, Josh Galen continued to be our number one runner taking 23rd in 16:02.4; with Nick Harper in 33rd in 16:19.5 and Sam Capagrosso in 37th in 16:32.4, with all three making the all time list for the course. Andrew Redston was 47th in 17:14.3 and missed the all time list at Beverly requiring a sub 17 minute mark. Arch rival SAMO finished in 6th place as a team, while Beverly was 8th.

SAMO Girls & Boys Varsity Take Ocean League #1 Cluster Meet As Beverly Takes 2nd
Brianna Simmons Takes 1st place in Girl’s Varsity Race in 20:41.90
Freshmen Boys win 1st league cluster meet led by Aaron Wolfe in 1st
The Girls and Boys Varsity teams took a disappointing 2nd place to arch rival Santa Monica High School in the first Ocean League Cluster Meet. Culver City and Morningside took 3rd and 4th respectively. The bright side of the meet was junior Brianna Simmons destruction of the girls field when she took first place in a time of 20:41.90, a full minute and 30 seconds ahead of second place! Her time is #2 all time at Beverly for the Kenneth Hahn course behind last year’s record setting run by Raquel Hefflin who ran 20:11.39. The Girls Varsity was hampered by not having Sydney Gray (out with an injured leg) and Sydney Segal (who apparently is playing on the tennis team). Our girls will have to re-group for the next Ocean League race scheduled for October 14, 2010. The Boys Varsity was highlighted by Josh Galen taking 3rd in 17:46.33 and Nick Harper taking 4th in 17:55.11, both runners dipping under 18 minutes to make the Beverly all time list for the course. Both the Boys and Girls JV teams took second to Santa Monica as well.
