FOOTLOCKER XC NATIONALS @ BALBOA PARK, SAN DIEGO 12/10/2011
XC SEASON ENDS WITH SYDNEY SEGAL AT FOOTLOCKER NATIONALS
commentary by Simon Langer
42 years + 42 years = 84 years later………..
Ordinarily I write the news, but today I have decided that a commentary was more in order. In the Fall of 1927 Beverly Hills High School was established and 42 years later in 1969 I was fortunate enough to be the first nationally ranked cross country runner at Beverly. Now once again 42 years later to the date, Sydney Segal is our school’s first nationally ranked girl in cross country. It really did not matter what place she took, because the honor was being on the national stage representing herself, her family, our school and our community. In a loaded field of the top 40 runners in the nation, Sydney Segal in her first cross country season and only a junior not only makes the nationals, but was 32nd in a time of 18:21 (a new school record for the Balboa Park course). The field was so bunched together that 23rd place through 34th place were separated by just 8 seconds. Just to make the nationals is an honor and Sydney you have honored us. Even Meredith Speakman (one of the top cross country runners from Pennsylvania) who finished last in 40th place deserves all the honors, as so many top notch girls in the United States did not even qualify for the nationals. We lose sight of the fact that these were 40 of the top girls in the entire United States. So even though we all were cheering and hoping that Sydney Segal would have finished higher in the rankings of the Footlocker High School Cross Country Nationals, to Beverly Hills High School, Sydney Segal in our hearts is our high school all american. So Sydney I welcome you to our exclusive club of two, after 84 years of our school’s history. Next year in San Diego!

FOOTLOCKER WEST REGIONAL @ MT SAC 3.1 Mile Course 12/3/2011
SYDNEY SEGAL QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS!
Takes 7th Place in Footlocker West Regionals
Sydney Segal in her first cross country season and only a junior took 7th place (out of 145 runners) in the “seeded” Footlocker West Regional race, where the best cross country high school runners from the Western United States ran to qualify for the Footlocker Nationals to be held on December 10, 2011 in San Diego, CA. Her time of 18:32 over the 3.1 mile MT SAC course is a new school record. The top 10 in the Western Regional made the Nationals, where they will face the top 10 from the other 3 regionals in the United States, for a total of 40 runners. This is the biggest news for Beverly Hills Cross Country in over 4 decades. She becomes only the second cross country runner at Beverly, and the first girl, to make the Nationals. Under the old National Postal system, Simon Langer in 1969 finished 15th in the West Regional and was 26th in the Nation. As such, Segal now has the highest finishing place for a Beverly runner in the West Regional. Ashley Bootesaz ran in the Footlocker West non-seeded senior race, where she took 19th place (out of 189 runners) in 21:00. Eli Flesch ran in the unseeded junior boys race and took 12th place (out of 312 runners) in 17:12. David Neiman took 163rd place (out of 363 runners) in the unseeded boys frosh-soph race in 20:11. [Brianna Simmons are other superstar did not run in the West Regional as she was taking the SAT test].

STATE XC FINALS @ WOODWARD PARK 3.1 Miles (11/26/2011)
OMG! NORMAN GIRLS TAKE 2 STATE MEDALS!
Sydney Segal Takes 6th in State Div. III Finals in 17:53
Brianna Simmons Takes 8th in State Div. III Finals in 18:14
Historic Achievement at State XC Finals for the Beverly Hills Normans
Since State XC Meets began in 1987 in California no Beverly athlete has ever won a state medal. Now in a historic achievement for our XC program, not one, but two varsity girls have garnered state medals at the same time. Sydney Segal and Brianna Simmons have throughout the season run with the best and finished with the best, that has only brought attention to our program like never before. Yes, the girls of Beverly Hills 90210 can run with the best that the State has to offer. Segal took 6th in a time of 17:53, while Brianna Simmons took 8th in 18:14, both shattering the Woodward Park school record of 19:12 set by Lyad Gozal back in 1993. Only the top 10 finishers in State receive medals. Here are the elite top 10 in State Div. III (out of 205 runners in the finals):

Carrie Verdon, Campolinda 17:19 (ranked #9 in U.S.)
Karlie Garcia, Oakmont 17:20 (ranked #11 in U.S.)
Madeleine Ankhelyi, Vista Del Lago 17:34 (honorable mention in U.S. rankings)
Rebecca Mehra, Palos Verdes 17:41 (honorable mention in U.S. rankings)
Nikki Hiltz, Aptos 17:46 (honorable mention in U.S. rankings)
Sydney Segal, Beverly Hills 17:53
Clare Carroll, Vista Del Lago 17:56
Brianna Simmons, Beverly Hills 18:14
Anna Walsh, Monterey 18:15
Christine Hoffman, San Luis Obispo 18:21

Palos Verdes of the Southern Section won the girls State team title in Division III. Bonita that edged out the Beverly Girls Varsity team to qualify for State took 13th place out of 24 schools in the State Division III Finals. That just shows us how strong our girls varsity team was this year.

CIF FINALS @ MT SAC 11/19/2011
SYDNEY SEGAL TAKES 2nd in CIF Finals in 17:28
BRIANNA SIMMONS TAKES 4th in CIF Finals in 17:58
Both Girls Qualify for State Meet
It’s not every day that Beverly athletics has two medalists in the CIF Finals and two qualifiers for the State Meet, but that is exactly what happened in the CIF Cross Country Finals at Mt San Antonio College over the 2.9 mile CIF hilly course. As has been the case all year long, both Sydney Segal and Brianna Simmons took to the front at the beginning of the race with Rebecca Mehra of Palos Verdes, Christine Hoffman of San Luis Obispo and Ashlee Powers of Corona del Mar, all whom are ranked in the top 8 in State. Rebecca Mehra took first in 17:23, and then right behind her in 2nd was Beverly’s Sydney Segal in 17:28, followed by Christine Hoffman in third in 17:33, Beverly’s Brianna Simmons in fourth in 17:58, and Ashlee Powers in 5th in 18:17. Breaking 18 minutes on the course is considered exceptional, and both Beverly girls broke the barrier, with Sydney Segal claiming the new school record for the course. These are the highest places ever attained by any Beverly girl to run in the CIF Finals in our history. It will not be surprising if they are not finally ranked by ESPN DYESTAT. The State Meet is next week and these could be the first two athletes to medal for our school at a State Cross Country Championship. [Note: State Meets in Cross Country in California began in 1987].
Girls Varsity: It was a very tough day for our Girls Varsity team as they missed making the State Finals by a mere 9 points as they finished in 8th place (top 7 teams advance). However, this was one of the best performances by a Beverly girls team at CIF, only bettered by the 1977 team that finished in 6th place. Ashley Bootesaz who has been our number three girl ran a personal best in 19:42 to move up to #5 all time for Beverly on the course. The surprise performance came from Beverly’s freshman Amanda Christovich who ran 20:32 to move up to #12 all time for Beverly on the course. Lily Ting ran 20:42 to move up to #15 all time on the course for Beverly runners. Marisa Rothman ran 21:18 and Da Eun Lee had a difficult day on the course running 22:31 far off her best performance.
Boys Varsity: The Boys Varsity surpassed expectations this year as they finished in 13th place in the CIF Finals. The top performance of the day was turned in by Josh Galen who took 24th place in 15:49, becoming only the 3rd runner ever (and #3 all time) at Beverly to break 16 minutes over the MT SAC course. Eli Flesch was our next runner in 16:16 (#8 all time for Beverly), followed by Aaron Karlin in 16:26 (#9 all time) and Chanan Batra in 16:26 (#13 all time).

10-12-2011 @ MT SAC (RAIN COURSE 2.91 Miles)
The morning started at the MT SAC CIF Prelims with the news that the regular course would not be run, but instead the 2.91 rain course would be utilized. The girls were up first in the first race of the day and as usual Brianna Simmons and Sydney Segal took off to the front of the pack with Rebecca Mehra of Palos Verdes, one of the top ranked girls in State. The three separated themselves from the rest of the field, as Mehra finished in first in 16:56, Brianna Simmons took second in 17:00 and Sydney Segal took third in 17:07. Only one girl in Division 3 ran faster than the trio in the first race, Christine Hoffman of San Luis Obispo who won her heat in 16:55. Although Brianna Simmons last year made the finals as an individual, this is the first time in 31 years (back in 1980) that the girls as a team return back to the finals. The girls tied for 4th in a score of 127 with South Hills, but South Hills won the tie-breaker so Beverly ended up in 5th place (top 5 teams qualified for finals). On the boys side, Beverly pulled one of the biggest surprises of the day as they took 4th place as a team to qualify for the finals, led by Josh Galen in 8th place in an outstanding time of 14:57. He becomes the first Beverly runner to ever break 15 minutes on a cross country course. The boys times were outstanding as Eli Flesch took 17th place in 15:09, Chanan Batra in 21st in 15:19, Aaron Karlin in 32nd in 15:27 and Aaron Wolfe in 44th in 15:46. The winner of the race was top ranked Adam Avila of Cathedral in 14:36. The boys make the CIF Finals for the first time during the qualifying era (since the 1960s)! The last boys team to run in the CIF Finals was during the pre-qualifying era in 1950—61 years ago! The CIF Finals on October 19, 2011 at MT SAC will be very competitive as only the top 7 teams move on to the State Finals.

BEVERLY DOMINATES AT OCEAN LEAGUE FINALS
Girls Varsity Win 7th Straight League Championship
Boys Varsity End SAMO’s Winning Streak To Take League Crown

GIRLS VARSITY TAKES 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th & 7th as Brianna Simmons and Sydney Segal Both Set School Record in Time of 19:31
BOYS VARSITY Led By Josh Galen in 1st – Ties School Record of 16:40 as Chanan Batra takes 2nd and Eli Flesch takes 4th
Girls Junior Varsity Takes 1st Thru 5th for Sweep & League Title
Boys Freshmen Takes 1st Thru 3rd & League Title
Girls Varsity: What can you say about our Girls Varsity. After last weeks victory at the MT SAC Invite and being a CIF SS Div. 3 ranked team by ESPN Dyestat they came to the Ocean League Finals to show that they are in fact deserving of a higher ranking in the CIF. With Brianna Simmons and Sydney Segal running together the entire race from start to finish, they both came across the finish line in 19:31, both setting a school record. The victory nod went to Brianna Simmons with Segal taking 2nd. They missed the course record of 19:27 rounded up as held by Anniya Louis of Culver City set in 2007 and did not even push the pace, otherwise the record would have fallen easily to both runners. Brianna Simmons joins a select group of runners at Beverly who have attained All League honors for 4 years in a row (Sarah Jabbari 2008, Raquel Hefflin 2009 and Sydney Gray 2010). Ashley Bootesaz ran a spectacular race to take third place in 20:50 (#4 all time for Beverly on the course) beating out Santa Monica’s #1 runner Alice Wasserman in 4th. Lily Ting took 5th place in 21:13 (her best of 20:50.32 is #5 all time), while Da Eun Lee took 6th in 21:26 (#10 all time) and Marisa Rothman in 7th in 21:31 (tie for #11 all time). In 12th place was Sarah Wendee in 23:22. All our top 6 girls attained All League Honors and the team now has won 7 straight league championships! The only team that has ever placed better in league was our powerful 1976 team which swept the first 5 places in league for a perfect score. Next is CIF for the girls where they look to qualify for CIF Finals.
Boys Varsity: Well for 8 straight years Santa Monica has won the Ocean League Title, while Beverly has taken 2nd place too many times to remember. However, not this year, as Beverly won the team title. Leading the way was Josh Galen, who fell down on the course only to get back up and take the victory by a wide margin as he finished in 1st in a time of 16:40. In past years times were recorded to the tenths of a second, whereas now times are recorded just to the seconds, so the school record held by Max Goldman of 16:39.46 in 2005 would today be rounded up to 16:40. Galen came across in the 16:39’s as well, as the clock was running, but his time was rounded up by the timer automatically to 16:40. As such, he ties the school record. The course record is held by Damon Coffman of Santa Monica a few years back who ran 16:15 rounded up. It is believed that Goldman’s and Galen’s times are the second fastest times ever over the course. Chanan Batra of Beverly took 2nd place in 17:01 (#4 all time at Beverly for the course), while Eli Flesch took 4th place in 17:17 (#7 all time), Aaron Karlin in 7th place in 17:34 and Aaron Wolfe in 8th place in 17:51 both made the all time list for Beverly. In 10th place was Andrew Redston in 18:25 and in 13th place was Alex Rohani in 18:40. Next up for the boys is the CIF Prelims.
Girls Junior Varsity: The Girls Junior Varsity Team scored a perfect score of 15 points taking 1st through 5th place to win the league crown. Our two freshmen girls Amanda Christovich and Tina Youabian took 1-2, as Christovich won the league title in 22:39 (that would have taken 10th place in the Girls Varsity race) while Youabian was runner-up in 22:47. They were the only girls to run under 23 minutes, which is outstanding for freshmen, as sub 22 minutes makes the Beverly all time list for Varsity. Annette Chang took 3rd place in 23:25, Sarah Hendry took 4th in 24:12 and Vanessa Torres took 5th in 24:24. As our top 5 runners took league honors and the team title.
Boys Freshman: Sean McAlister led the way as he took 1st place in 19:57, while Beverly’s other top two freshman Cameron Forbes (new to the team) and Bardia Soltani took second and third respectively in the same time of 20:23. The team took the team title.
Boys Junior Varsity: The boys junior varsity was the only Beverly team not to win the league title, as they finished 2nd to Santa Monica. However, Beverly had 3 boys in the top 10: Caio Corvalho in 4th in 18:53, Michael Redston in 5th in 19:19, and David Neiman in 9th in 19:32.

Team Scores:
Girls Varsity: BH 17; SAMO 44; Culver City 84, Hawthorne 117, Morningside 141
Boys Varsity: BH 22; SAMO 40; Culver City 77, Hawthorne 113, Morningside 144, Inglewood 170

GIRLS VARSITY TAKES 1st @ MT SAC INVITE RACE
Sydney Segal (1st place) and Brianna Simmons (2nd place) Lead Team
To Victory Both Setting School Record in 18:24!
Josh Galen Leads Boys Team in 16:10!
MT. SAC INVITE 3 Miles – October 21, 2011
Girls Highlights: The Girls Varsity Team for the first time this year had all of its runners in one race as they ran away with victory in their race at the MT SAC Invite. The girls scored an impressive low score of 60 points as the 2nd place team Shafter of Central California was in 2nd with 102 points and San Marcos of Santa Barbara was third. More impressive was the total team time of 1:39.21 almost 5 minutes ahead of the next team in the race. Beverly’s time in comparison to the other Division 3 races of the day put them ahead of Bolsa Grande (1:39.50) which is ranked #10 in the CIF SS Div. 3 and South Pasadena (1:39.40) which is ranked No. 11, and just behind West Torrance (1:39.07) which is ranked #5. From the beginning of the race the tandem of Sydney Segal and Brianna Simmons took the lead as they ran the entire race together and finished together at the finish line in the same time of 18:24. The victory nod went to Segal, as both girls set a new school record for the course. This is the first time Beverly runners have taken 1-2 in a prestigious race like MT SAC. They distanced the next finisher in third place by nearly a minute! Ashley Bootesaz performace in 7th place was overshadowed by Segal and Simmons run, as she ran 20:12, the #8 performance of all time for Beverly on the course. Da Eun Lee finished in 21st in 21:00, Lily Ting in 29th in 21:21, and Marisa Rothman in 31st in 21:24, all times that make the All Time List at Beverly for the course. All races at MT SAC had approximately 150 runners. In the Girls freshman race Amanda Christovich took 12th place in 22:12, while Tina Youabian took 25th in 22:55. Both great times for freshmen as sub-22 minutes makes the Beverly All Time List for the course.
Boys Highlights: The highlight of the day was Josh Galen’s stellar race where he took 7th place in the boys varsity race in 16:10, the #4 time on the All Time List at Beverly for the course. Both Eli Flesh in 18th place in 16:35 and Chanan Batra in 30th place in 16:47 were times that made the All Time List, as Aaron Karlin in 52nd in 17:08 and Aaron Wolfe in 66th in 17:26 missed running under 17 minutes to make the Beverly All Time List for the course. The boys team took 6th place in their race of 22 teams. In the boys JV race Alex Rohani took 9th place in 17:34, while Caio Corvalho took 38th in 18:28. In the boys sophomore race our top finisher was Michael Redston in 37th place in 18:34 and Ethan Plante was 57th in 18:53, while Sean McAlister was our top runner in the freshman race in 31st place in 18:45.

Next is the Ocean League Championship for league honors and qualification for CIF.

BREA OLINDA INVITE @ CARBON CYN REGIONAL PARK 3.1 Miles
BRIANNA SIMMONS 2nd AT BREA INVITE IN SCHOOL RECORD
Aaron Karlin Takes 2nd in FR-SOPH RACE IN SCHOOL RECORD
With a number of top runners from top ranked schools such as Saugus, Burbank, Arcadia, Crescenta Valley, Brea Olinda, and Colony to name a few, the races were very competitive on a hot day for the 3.1 mile tough course where times are always slower. In the featured girls varsity race of the day Xochitl Navarette of Colony one of the best girl runners in state ran 19:12 for the course (the 4th fastest ever over the course). She has been unchallenged this year. However, it was not the Saugus girls who were up to the task, but Beverly’s own Brianna Simmons who raised a number of eyebrows when she came roaring in to take second place ahead of the top ranked Saugus girls in 19:31 (the seventh fastest ever over the course) and setting a new school record for the course by one minute! The surprise of the day was in the top seeded boys frosh soph race where Beverly’s Aaron Karlin took 2nd place to Steven de la Rosa of Arcadia. Karlin’s time was 17:50 setting a new school record for the course (that’s a varsity school record!). The old school record was set last year by Nick Harper in 17:59. SOUTH BAY CUP 2.8 Miles @ Columbia Park, Torrance

South Bay Cup A Training Run for Team
With many runners out for the Jewish New Year holidays (Rosh Hashonah -the year 5772), the team used the South Bay Cup as a training run for the upcoming Brea Invite on Saturday.
Highlights:
Even without going full out and at just an even pace Brianna Simmons took 6th place in the girls varsity race in 17:54.6. One has to wonder what could she have run had she gone full out. The same could be said for fellow runners Lily Ting and Ashley Bootesaz finishing in 25th and 26th in 19:23.5 and 19:30.7 (Simmons and Ting were already #1 and #2 all time for Beverly on the course with faster times last year, but Bootesaz moves up to #3 all time without any real effort). In the boys varsity, Eli Flesch looked like he was just striding the course and still managed to run 15:49.9 in 17th place, which is #3 all time at Beverly for the course. Andrew Redston took 25th in 16:18.9. In the boys sophomore race Aaron Wolfe took 6th in 16:43.1, while Aaron Karlin took 9th in 16:56.3. Redston, Wolfe and Karlin all made the all time list at Beverly for the course.

[Please note: There will probably be an adjustment on the all time list for the course for runners who ran prior to 2010, when the course was slightly longer at 2.9 miles. The course last year was shortened to 2.8 miles]

Boys Varsity End 8 Year Drought Against Santa Monica H.S.
Flesch & Batra Lead Boys Varsity with 2nd and 3rd Place Finishes
Sean McAlister Wins Boys Freshman Race
Amanda Christovich Takes 2nd in Girls JV, Best Girl Freshman in League
No one knew what to expect in the first league meet of the year, with the boys top runner Josh Galen and the girls number two runner Sydney Segal out with injuries. However, both the boys and girls varsity pulled out wins over runner-up Santa Monica (“SAMO”), Culver City, Hawthorne, Morningside and Inglewood. The girls are going for their 7th straight league championship this year. The boys have been perennial second place finishers the last eight years to Santa Monica High School. The drought is over as the Boys took their first win over arch rival Santa Monica in as many years. The girls varsity were led by All CIF runner Brianna Simmons taking first place in 20:00.40, the third fastest time ever by a girl over the Kenneth Hahn course. Lily Ting took third place in 21:46.34, placing her as #3 all time girl ever for Beverly on the course. Ashley Bootesaz took 5th in 22:07.88, Marisa Rothman took 8th in 23:09.08, and Da Eun Lee took 9th in 23:13.21. Flesch’s time is the #8 all time ever for Beverly boys over the course! Beverly also had outstanding performances by Aaron Wolfe in 5th in 18:27.98, Andrew Redston in 6th in 18:35.88, and Aaron Karlin in 10th in 18:54.42. In the boys freshman race, SAMO beat Beverly, but Sean McAlister of Beverly took first by a country mile as he ran 19:48.76, while no one else in the race broke 21 minutes. Two other Beverly performances of note in the freshman race were Bardia Soltani in 5th in 22:03.07 and Harrison Baseman in 9th in 22:35.33. In the girls Junior Varsity (there is no girls freshman race, so junior varsity includes all grades of girls who are not on varsity) a slight mishap occurred as all the girls in the race made a wrong turn and cut the course short. As such, their times do not count. The race was won by SAMO’s sophomore Rachel Kirkhofer, but Beverly’s freshman Amanda Christovich took 2nd place just 11 seconds behind the winner, establishing her as the best girl freshman in league. Other notable performances in the race for Beverly were Sarah Hendry in 6th, Annette Chang in 7th and Tina Youabian in 10th. In the counterpart race of the boys junior varsity the best performances by Beverly runners came from Ethan Shiri in 4th in 19:49.50, David Neiman in 5th in 20:05.59, Jack Sternshein in 7th in 20:23.88 and Sam Levy in 8th in 20:28.63.
