Alexander Rohani (Sina Rohani) of Beverly, Class of 2013, ran for Iran in the 2014 World Junior (under 20 yrs of age) Championship held here in the U.S. at the University of Oregon.  He ran the 400 meters in 48.03 in his heat, but did not qualify for the next round.  He ran his best time this year when he took 4th place in the Pac 12 championship in 46.68.  The second fastest 400m ever for a junior in Iran, just short of the Iran Junior National record of 46.57.  He still has until December 31, 2014 to break the Iran National Junior Record.  Beverly in the past has had two athletes who set junior national records (see TF Records icon on left margin).

CIF SS DIVISION FINALS – May 24, 2014 @ Cerritos College

AMANDA BLOCK IN GIRLS POLE VAULT TAKES 4th PLACE MEDAL
IN CIF SS DIVISION 3 FINALS !!!

Sophomore Amanda Block took a 4th place medal in the CIF SS Division 3 Finals in the Girls Varsity Pole Vault.  That is the first “girl’s pole vault medal” in CIF ever won by a Beverly girl in our history of the program, and she is only a sophomore.  She cleared 10-9, which wasn’t high enough to qualify for the CIF Masters, but as a sophomore she has a bright future.  The next height after 10-9 was 11-3, which Amanda just barely missed.  The 11-3 was what was needed to qualify for the Masters.  This is the sixth straight year at least one Beverly girl has medalled in the CIF SS Division Finals.  Amanda’s 5 points for 4th put Beverly as a team in a 4 way tie for 27th place.  The top 6 medalists for the girls pole vault Division 3 were as follows (placing with same height is based on least misses):

  1. Kaitlyn Merritt – Santa Margarita 13-3 (Ranked No. 1 in State)
  2. Kate Thomas – Santa Margarita 11-3
  3. Brooke Pestano – Oak Park 10-9
  4. Amanda Block – Beverly Hills 10-9
  5. Imani Cook-Gist – Harvard Westlake 10-9
  6. Kari McCollum – Orange Lutheran 10-3

Ocean League:   Kevin Beacham of Culver City took 2nd in the boys varsity long jump in 24-0 1/4 in Division 2 and qualified to the Masters as the 4th overall jumper in all divisions.  Kendahl Carter of Culver took 8th in the girls varsity 100m hurdles in 15.42 and 9th in the 300m hurdles in 46.01, and did not qualify for the Masters.   Marcel Espinoza of Santa Monica H.S. took 2nd in the Division 1 boys varsity 100 meters in 10.74 and was tied for 8th overall in all divisions to make the Masters meet.

Others of Note:  Madison Golden who ran for Beverly as a freshman, and now as a sophomore runs for Serra HS in Division 4, took 5th in the 200m in a PR 25.02 and 6th in the 100m in a PR 12.17, and was on the 4X100m relay which took 2nd in 46.80 (winning 3 medals), and qualified for the Masters Meet in the relay.   Nate Washington of Crespi HS (Coach Dwayne Washington’s son) took 1st in the Division 3 boys varsity triple jump in 46-8 3/4, and was 6th overall in all the divisions to qualify for the Masters.

Elgibility for ALL TIME LISTS AT BEVERLY

Sophomores you have until July 31, 2014 to move up or make the Frosh-Soph All Time Lists at Beverly, before you are eligible only for the Varsity All Time List .   Seniors will also have until July 31, 2014 to move up or make the Varsity All Time Lists before their careers are over at Beverly (even though Seniors graduate in June 2014).  This is based on the last high school level meets for the season (Golden West 6/28, USATF Junior Olympics 7/21-27, USAATF Youth Outdoor Championship 7/24-29).   If any Beverly athlete runs in any open meets and their performance makes the All Time List, please report it to the website.   There will be many open meets during the summer.

TRACK & FIELD: 2014 Pre-Season news!

Of course what lies in store for our team this 2014 season is unknown, but we look forward to our athletes keeping up the tradition of our proud program.   Each year in track & field we honor those athletes from our past, as anniversaries of accomplishments that are to be recognized so we do not forget those that preceded us.

70 Year Anniversary of the Great 1944 Team (Beverly vs. Inglewood)

Recognized as one of the greatest track & field teams ever at Beverly, the 1944 team is a standout in our history.   Due to World War II, the State Meet was cancelled, leaving only the CIF SS Finals.  All eyes in the State looked forward to the battle between Beverly Hills High and Inglewood High, co-favorites for the CIF SS title that year. The show-down meet was not a disappointment.   It was held on May 27, 1944 at the L.A. Coliseum, and it was a battle to the end.  When the dust settled Inglewood edged out Beverly for the title 23 to 22.  A single point separated the two teams, who now 70 years later both schools find themselves in the same league, and will face each other on this the 70 year anniversary.  Each team had one individual CIF champion in 1944.  Beverly’s Sterry Fagan won the 880 yard run, while Inglewood’s Darrell Kreitz won the 120 yd High Hurdles.  Both High School All Americans in their respective events.   The other athletes for Beverly who were the backbone of the team were Dick Rubin in the 440 yard run (2nd in the CIF Finals), Bob Olds in the 120 yard High Hurdles (2nd in the CIF Finals), Eric Blore in the Shot Put (3rd in the CIF Finals), David Gill in the High Jump (4th in the CIF Finals) and was also in the long jump, the 880 yard relay team of Bob Palmer, Bill Chamberlain, Mickey Titus and Dick Rubin (2nd in the CIF Finals), and Mickey Titus in the 220 yard dash, Jim Blakely in the 880 yard run, Karl Henning in the shot put and Bob McDonough in the long jump.   A meet to remember and two teams to be remembered this year when Beverly and Inglewood meet in 2014.
