2011 T&F

FAREWELL RUN – July 6, 2011
SYDNEY GRAY RUNS 1600m in 4:59.78!
Without fanfare or roaring crowds, in an Open Meet with no competition, at West Los Angeles College, Sydney Gray ran in her last high school meet, taking first place in the women’s 1600m, in a time of 4:59.78, becoming only the third girl in Beverly’s history to break 5 minutes.  Although she was just short of the school record held by the Zucker twins of Judi and Shari of 4:57.30 back in 1978, she was more than pleased to break the magical 5 minute barrier in high school.  To make things interesting she also ran the 100m in 13.77 and 200m in 27.05, the latter making the Beverly all time list.  She is now on the all time list for every event from 200m to the 3200m!   It was her farewell run before she goes off to college, where she will be running for the Berkeley track team.  She will be sorely missed and she leaves a legacy of school records, All time lists, All league, All CIF, All State and High School All American honors.  Farewell Sydney and make the Normans proud.

GRAY RUNS MILE IN 5:03.45 (1600m @ 5:01.75)
BEVERLY PERFORMS WELL AT GOLDEN WEST INVITE
The Golden West Invitational invites some of the best track & field runners in the Western United States to compete against one another.  Sydney Gray opted not to run her specialty 800m, but instead took on the milers/1600m runners.  In a close race Danielle Aragon (Billings HS) who is the #1 1600m runner from the State of Montana (the only sub 5 minute 1600m runner in the State of Montana at 4:57.08) took first in 5:02.34 (1600m in 5:00.64) over Beverly’s Sydney Gray in second place who ran a personal best 5:03.45 mile (1600m in 5:01.75) which moves her up to #3 all time at Beverly.  In third was Rebecca Hobby of Hughson HS (voted this years top distance runner from Stanislaus County, CA) in 5:10.46; fourth was Mary Jo Wright (one of the best 1600m runners from Wyoming) in 5:10.75; fifth was Audra Destefano (one of the best 1600m runners from Idaho) in 5:11.36.  In sixth was Beverly’s own Brianna Simmons in 5:11.37 (1600m in 5:09.67) and in seventh Beverly’s Sydney Segal in 5:17.11 (1600m in 5:15.41 – a personal best).   In the boys 400m there was a showdown between two of the top sophomores in the U.S., Drevian Young of Nimitz HS in Texas #1 soph in the U.S. (who has run 47.18) against Beverly’s Alex Rohani at 47.90 —#4 soph in the U.S.   Young took first place in the race in 47.30 ahead of Rohani’s 2nd place finish in 48.30.  In the girls 400m sophomore Vanessa Torres took 9th place that saw 10 girls break 60 seconds, as she ran a personal best 58.98!   In the boys 800m Chanan Batra took 5th in 1:57.84.  In the frosh soph Mile –DaEun Lee took 7th in 5:52.45  (1600m in 5:50.75).

STATE FINALS – JUNE 4, 2011
SYDNEY GRAY TAKES 4th IN STATE IN GIRLS 800m
NEW SCHOOL RECORD 2:09.15 (#18 in U.S.)
HIGH SCHOOL ALL AMERICAN!
In the fastest girls 800m ever in high school the first 7 girls broke 2:10.00! Amy Weissenbach of Harvard Westlake, the favorite, set a new State and U.S. National Record in an amazing 2:02.04.  In second was Savannah Camacho of Templeton who ran 2:07.84 (her best is 2:07.65—#7 in the U.S.).  In third was Charlotte Kuzminsky of Canyon Crest Academy in 2:09.11 (#17 in the U.S.).  Then Beverly’s own Sydney Gray who was in last place at the first lap, came on fast at the end to take 4th in 2:09.15 (#18 in the U.S.).  She officially is All State and a High School All American—the 46th high school track & field all american at Beverly since 1927.  Her time breaks her own school record set at the State prelims of 2:10.51.  In 5th place was Hanna Edwards of El Toro in 2:09.55 (#20 in the U.S.).  In 6th place Dynasty Gammage of Long Beach Poly in 2:09.70 (her best coming in was 2:08.72—#11 in the U.S.).  In 7th was Katie Fry of Exeter in 2:09.78 (#22 in the U.S.).  In 8th was Arielle Stevenson of Long Beach Poly in 2:10.58 (her best coming in was 2:10.08 (#24 in the U.S.).  One of the greatest fields of girls 800 meter races of all time.  All high school all americans!  Gray scored 5 points for Beverly toward the team scoring, so she single-handedly placed Beverly as a team in a 8 way tie for 26th place in State.  A total of 54 schools scored in the girls team scoring, with Long Beach Poly winning the girls, as well as the boys, State team titles.

CIF STATE PRELIMS – June 3, 2011
SYDNEY GRAY #1 QUALIFIER FOR STATE FINALS
SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN 800m in 2:10.51 !!!!
Is this storybook news ever going to end?  Sydney Gray has probably shocked the girls high school track experts by taking first place in her State prelims heat in 2:10.51, the fastest time in the prelim heats at STATE—faster than girls ranked in the top 10 in the U.S.!  She is currently ranked #24 in the U.S. (top 50 is high school all-american honors).  She also breaks the Beverly school record set last year by State finalist Raquel “Rocky” Hefflin of 2:11.12.  The State finals are tomorrow on June 4, 2011.   She is currently ranked #6 in State and she will be facing the 5 girls ranked ahead of her in the State finals.

CIF MASTERS MEET @ CERRITOS COLLEGE MAY 27, 2011
SYDNEY GRAY QUALIFIES FOR STATE MEET
IN GIRLS 800 METERS IN 2:12.49 !!!!!
[Gray is seeded #9 for State]
The Southern Section Masters Meet is known as the toughest and best sectional meet in the United States.  So just making the Masters Meet is an honor in and of itself. Billed as one of the best fields assembled for the high school girls 800 meter run, everyone in the stadium at the CIF Masters Meet on May 27, 2011 (where the best of the best of all divisions in CIF met head to head to qualify for State) saw 10 girls of 12 entered ranked as high school all-americans (top 50 ranking in the U.S.) and expectations were met as the crowd witnessed one of the deepest fields of girls high school races in the 800 meters, where the last place girl ran 2:13.03 to qualify for State.  The entire field was ranked in the top 70 in the U.S.  AMAZING!  To qualify for State one had to run 2:14.09 or better.  No surprise, but the entire field made the State qualifying time.  Sydney Gray came in seeded 10th in the race, as the field ran an extremely fast race, where she took 9th place in a personal best 2:12.49 to qualify for the State Meet.  That ranks her #64 in the U.S. and currently #50 (for high school all american status) is at 2:11.97 in the U.S.  She will at State have three goals: (1) making the State Finals top 9 from the State prelims, (2) breaking Beverly’s school record of 2:11.12, and (3) making the top 50 in the U.S. to be a high school all american.   Beverly’s legendary girls 800 meter runners of Raquel Hefflin (2:11.12) in 2010, Barbara Gottlieb (2:11.64) in 1981 and Cynthia Warner (2:11.80) in 1977 stand before her on Beverly’s all time list.  Warner and Gottlieb were high school all-americans, while Hefflin was ranked 59th last year just missing the top 50.  It is predicted that this year one will have to run in the 2:10’s to be in the top 50 in the U.S. as the competition is just getting better each year.  The CIF Masters meet girls usually dominate State (last year the top 8 in the State Finals were from the Masters Meet in the Southern Section and it should be no different this year).  ALERT:  The first 9 girls from Masters of the Southern Section are seeded 1 through 9 for the State Meet!  That means Gray is currently seeded #9 going into the State Prelims.  Top 9 make the State Finals.

Girls CIF Masters Meet Results:
Amy Weisenbach – Harvard-Westlake  2:06.18 (#2 in U.S.)

ALEX ROHANI TAKES 3rd in Boys CIF Finals 400m in 48.94
BRIANNA SIMMONS TAKES 7th in Girls CIF Finals 800m in 2:18.83
Boys 4X400m Takes 7th in CIF Finals in 3:23.06
Girls 4X400m Takes 8th in CIF Finals in 4:01.61
Beverly Girls: After a disappointing cross country season plagued by injuries and a discouraging beginning track season, nothing was going to stop senior Sydney Gray from her destiny that resulted in her being crowned the Division 2 CIF Girl’s Champion in the 800 meter run.  Her first place time of 2:13.51 qualified her for the CIF Masters Meet – Beverly’s sole qualifier.  If she runs the same time at the CIF Masters Meet she will automatically qualify for the STATE Meet.  The qualifying standard for STATE is 2:14.09.  The last time Beverly had a CIF track champion was back in 1998.  Gray’s time is #4 all time at Beverly. Brianna Simmons who also was in the 800m race finished in 7th place in the CIF Finals in a time of 2:18.83, and as a junior will be back next year.   The girls 4X400m Relay of Vanessa Torres, Sydney Gray, Lily Ting and Allison Wolff took 8th place in the CIF Finals in a time of 4:01.61.   With Gray getting 10 points for 1st, Simmons getting 2 points for 7th and the relay getting 1 point for 8th, the girls team with 13 points tied for 16th place in the CIF Finals.
Beverly Boys:  Although the boys were expected to do better at the CIF Finals, one cannot be disappointed with the great season they had.  Alex Rohani who was expected to win the boys 400m final finished in 3rd place, which is still a great accomplishment for a sophomore.  He ran 48.94 and got 7 points for the Beverly team.  Our boys 4X400m relay of Joel Steinberg, Cameron Countryman, Chanan Batra and Alex Rohani finished in 7th place in a time of 3:23.06 for 2 points.  The team’s 9 points finished in a tie for 25th place in the CIF Finals.   All of our boys, underclassmen, will be back next year.

BEVERLY QUALIFIERS FOR CIF FINALS:
ALEX ROHANI #1 CIF Qualifier in Boys 400m in 47.90
SYDNEY GRAY #1 CIF Qualifier in Girls 800m in 2:14.48
BRIANNA SIMMONS #8 CIF Qualifier in Girls 800m in 2:18.61
Boys 4X400 Relay #3 CIF Qualifier in 3:22.68
Girls 4X400 Relay #9 CIF Qualifier in 4:01.83
The CIF Southern Section Division 2 prelims is one of the toughest divisions in the State, and only the top 9 qualify for the finals.  The meet started on a sour note when our boys 4X100m relay of Mario Conti, Alex Rohani, Joel Steinberg & Ariel Nasib was in the mix, but on the last handoff of the baton our team passed out of zone and were disqualified.  Things began to turn around though when super sophomore Alex Rohani took his heat of the 400m in 47.90, the #1 time of the day in the event.  His closest rival ran 48.69.  He breaks his own Frosh Soph school record and moved into #2 all time Varsity at Beverly passing Jeff James 1983 time of 47.91.  Rohani also took 4th in his heat of the 200m in 22.10–and although he did not qualify to the finals that is a new Frosh Soph boys 200m record breaking Trevor Walters time of 22.34 set in 2008.  Rohani now has the 200m, 400m and 800m frosh soph boys records at Beverly.   The biggest news was the girls 800m, where senior Sydney Gray ran a lifetime best of 2:14.48 (#5 Varsity all time), winning her heat and running the #1 time of the day, with the #2 girl running 2:15.51.  Both Rohani’s time and Gray’s time should move them up in the State rankings.   Brianna Simmons in her heat of the 800m took second in a lifetime best of 2:18.61 and eighth overall to also qualify for the finals.  Our boys 4X400 relay of Joel Steinberg, Cameron Countryman, Chanan Batra & Alex Rohani took first in their heat in 3:22.68 (#3 overall) and qualified for the finals.  Their counterpart –the girls 4X400 relay team of Brianna Simmons, Vanessa Torres, Lily Ting & Sydney Gray took 2nd in their heat in 4:01.83 to nab the #9 overall time and qualify for the finals.  Brianna Simmons tried to qualify in the girls 1600m, but had an off-day for the race, running 5:09.34 short of the last qualifier who ran 5:04.15.   Sophomore Sydney Segal ran both the girls 1600m and 3200m, and although she did not qualify she ran tremendous times—1600m in 5:15.65 (#2 all time frosh-soph and #7 all time varsity at Beverly) and the 3200m in 11:31.48 (#2 all time frosh soph and #4 all time varsity at Beverly).  Other non-qualifiers were Chelsea Austin who went  5-1 in the high jump, tied for 10th, (#6 all time varsity at Beverly), narrowly missing the qualifying height of 5-3 –she also tied for 15th in the triple jump in 34-4.  Julian Jackson threw a new best for him in the boys discus 128-8 (#15 varsity all time).  Jackson also threw the shot put 46-5.   Josh Galen ran the boys 1600m (4:33.74) and 3200m (10:08.66) double.  Vanessa Torres took 4th in her heat in the girls 400m in 60.98.   Chanan Batra took 6th in his heat of the boys 800m in 1:58.26.  Cameron Countryman skipped the boys 4X100 relay due to a hip injury, but ran in the 200m finishing 5th in 22.19.  Liza Raffi lost her footing in the girls 100m hurdles and was forced to DQ.   Next is the CIF SS Division 2 Finals.

SAMO DUAL MEET APRIL 7, 2011  BEVERLY CLINCHES OCEAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
NORMANS DEFEAT VIKINGS IN BATTLE FOR THE OCEAN
CHELSEA AUSTIN WINS HJ, LJ & TJ TO LEAD GIRLS VARSITY
It was cold and windy and one could hear the waves of victory at the nearby ocean at the Santa Monica High School stadium as the Normans of Beverly were victorious over the Vikings of Santa Monica to clinch the Ocean League Championship across all divisions.  The boys varsity won 82-33, the girls varsity won 81-50, the girls frosh soph won 74-35, and the boys frosh soph won 69-53, as all divisions for Beverly remained undefeated in league with a 4-0 record.  All that stands in the way of officially winning the league championship is the dual meet against Inglewood, where Beverly will be the heavy favorite.  That leaves Culver City and Santa Monica to battle it out for second place when they meet in their last meet of the season.
HIGHLIGHTS:  Girls Varsity & FS:  Chelsea Austin won 3 events for the girls varsity when she triple jumped 34-0 1/4 (#7 all time @ Beverly for the event), long jumped 15-8 (tie for #24 all time) and high jumped 4-10 (tie for #9 all time)—scoring 15 points.  Melina Nasab tied her varsity pole vault school record of 8-0.  Sydney Gray won the 400m in 62.20, as Allison Wolff took 2nd in 63.18.  Brianna Simmons and Sydney Segal took 1-2 in the 3200m in 11:54.03 and 11:54.11 respectively.  The 3200m race also saw Ashley Bootesaz run 12:21.47, Jessica Robert run 12:37.88, and Erica Hendry run 12:56.93—all girls making or moving up the all time list.  Brianna Simmons also won the 800m in 2:23.56.  In the 1600m Brianna Simmons (5:26.92) and Sydney Segal (5:27.07) thought they had taken 1-2 in the race, and both let up at the finish only to see Santa Monica’s top distance runner Alex Wasserman (5:26.91) pass them right at the finish line—a regrettable error.  Liza Raffi took 1st in the varsity 100m hurdles in 18.05, while Faith France won the varsity 300m hurdles in 52.42.  Vanessa Torres and Allison Wolff took 2nd and 3rd in the varsity 200m both running 27.62.  Elena Rust won the girls frosh soph 200m in 28.41.  The girls varsity 4X100m relay (51.63) and 4X400m relay (4:09.89) took 1st place.   Boys Varsity & FS:   Cameron Countryman won both the 100m (11.17) and 200m races and anchored the 4X100m relay (44.53) to victory.  Alex Rohani won the varsity 800m in 1:59.31.  Chanan Batra won the varsity 1600m in 4:40.00, with Josh Galen in 2nd in 4:41.43.  Galen then won the varsity 3200m in 10:33.58, with Eli Flesch in 2nd in 10:37.01.  Mario Conti won the varsity 400m in 52.68.  Julian Jackson won the varsity shot put in 45-8 and varsity discus in 110-7.  David Bresnick took 3rd in the discus in 99-8.  Aaron Karlin won the frosh soph 800m (2:14.77) and 1600m (4:53.93).  Omid Hakimianpour won the frosh soph 100m (12.29) and 200m (24.96).  Jeff Toobi won the frosh soph 400m in 57.36.  Willie Green won the varsity high jump in 5-10 and the 110mH in 17.86, and took 2nd in the 300m hurdles in 43.22.

VICTORIOUS OVER MORNINGSIDE REMAINING UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE AT 3-0!

Junior shot putter Julian Jackson easily won the varsity boys shot put with a heave of 52-6, the #7 all time throw at Beverly.  That was the big highlight of the meet, which saw Beverly easily sweep all the divisions against Morningside to remain undefeated in league.  The Girls Varsity won by a score of 90 to 20; Boys Varsity won 99 to 26; Girls Frosh Soph won 73 to 22; and the Boys Frosh Soph won 74-38.  The teams are 3-0 in league and for all intents and purposes the upcoming dual meet with Santa Monica High School –our arch-rival in league–on April 7, 2011 will determine the 2011 Ocean League Dual Meet Championship.  The competition against Morningside was predicted to be one-sided, so performances on the whole were held back by the team.  The distance teams swept the 800m, 1600m and 3200m in all divisions.  One of the unnoticed highlights of the meet was the girls varsity high jump as Chelsea Austin, Sarah Wendee and Julia Mason swept the event all jumping 4-10!   Mario Conti made the boys varsity all time list when he won the 200m in 22.4.  The 4X100m girls varsity relay of Vanessa Torres, Chelsea Simmons, Allison Wolff and Sydney Gray won in 51.8.  Sydney Gray also won the 200m girls varsity race in 27.1.  In the 400m races Brianna Simmons won the girls varsity race in 62.2; Cameron Countryman won the boys varsity race in 51.7, as Chanan Batra was in 3rd in 53.8.  In the 100m Joel Steinberg won the boys varsity race in 11.4, while Omid Hakimianpour won the boys frosh soph race in 11.6.  In the boys varsity 300m hurdles Willie Green took 1st in 43.4 and Frank Brown took 2nd in 43.8.  Brown also won the long jump in 19-6, while Green took 2nd in 19-3.  Melina Nasab won the girls varsity pole vault in 7-0.

MARCH 26, 2011 – MUSTANG RELAYS @ MIRA COSTA HIGH SCHOOL
GIRLS VARSITY & BOYS VARSITY WIN 4X800m RELAYS
After an emotional and physical dual meet with Culver City on Thursday, the Normans turned around on Saturday to face some of the tough teams at Mira Costa’s Mustang Relays–including host Mira Costa, Redondo, Loyola, and our legal rivals Santa Monica and Culver City—altogether 22 high schools.  The team used the meet as a workout, but put the effort of having our best middle distance and distance runners in the 4X800m relays.  Although the runners were visibly tired and did not perform to their expected level —they still managed to run a season’s best in both the boys and girls 4X800m relays and the girls then at the end of the meet put together a season’s best 4X400m relay as well.  The girls varsity team was led by Sydney Gray and Brianna Simmons –as the team of Ashley Bootesaz (2:35.59), Sydney Gray (2:27.32), Lily Ting (2:34.93) and Brianna Simmons (2:23.96) ran a 10:01.29 outdistancing the field by a country mile and took the 1st place medals at the meet.  Their time was #2 all time at Beverly. The boys in a mirror image of the girls race were far ahead of the field to take 1st place as well with the team of Nick Harper (2:07.65), Alex Rohani (2:03.74), Josh Galen (2:05.54) and Chanan Batra (2:00.94) running a time of 8:17.91. Their time was #2 all time at Beverly.  Then the team of Sydney Gray, Vanessa Torres, Brianna Simmons and Allison Wolff took 2nd in the 4X400m relay in a fine time of 4:07.30.  Cameron Countryman took 3rd place in the boys varsity 100m in a time of 11.13; as Ariel Nasib took 6th in 11.49.  Chelsea Austin took 3rd in the girls varsity high jump at 4-10.

March 24, 2011 – Ocean Lg Meet @BHHS versus Culver City and Hawthorne

ALEX ROHANI BREAKS FS SCHOOL RECORD IN 400m Running 49.2
then Anchors Boys Varsity 4X400m relay to VICTORY over Culver City!  CHANAN BATRA SCORES 13 Points Single-handedly
CAMERON COUNTRYMAN RUNS 200m in 21.9
Girls Varsity Dominate Meet
The double dual meet against Culver City and Hawthorne was held on a cold, damp day with intermittent rain.  The Girls Varsity won easily over Culver City 92-24 and over Hawthorne 103-11. The Girls Frosh-Soph and Boys Frosh- Soph teams also had lopsided victories over Culver City and Hawthorne.
BOYS VARSITY: However, the real competition of the day was the dual meet between the Boys Varsity teams of Beverly Hills and Culver City. The meet was neck and neck in the points total, with some outstanding performances, that by the end of the meet it all came down to the 4X400m relay.  Sophomore Alex Rohani had already won the Boys Varsity 400m race in 49.2 (49.34 FAT), shattering the Frosh-Soph school record of 50.64, and moved him up to #5 all time on the Beverly Varsity list for the event as well.  His time is the fastest Frosh-Soph time in the State and puts him at #11 in State for varsity runners!  However, with two events remaining the 3200m and the relay—the Boys Varsity found themselves down 64 to 56.  Then the boys distance squad took over the 3200m event–as Josh Galen took 1st in 10:19.3, Chanan Batra took 2nd in 10:22.7, and Nick Harper took 3rd in 10:24.00 (for a 9-0 sweep)— and that put Beverly up 65-64 over Culver.  Whoever won the relay would win the meet.  This was like deja vu to last year’s meet with Culver where the same exact scenario occurred when Beverly won the relay to win the meet and eventually the Ocean League title.  In a storybook ending again, Beverly and Culver were stride for stride as each runner got the baton and passed it on.  Mario Conti took the first leg in 51.48, then Cameron Countryman ran the second leg in 50.65, then Joel Steinberg ran the third leg in 52.59, and Alex Rohani brought it home in 48.47 (all unofficial times), beating Culver by only two tenths of a second—3:23.2 to 3:23.4 (#10 on the all time list at Beverly).  How fast was the relay?  It put Beverly and Culver as #5 in #7 in State!  Chanan Batra took the 800m in 2:06.0, while Alex Rohani was 2nd in 2:06.4.  Batra also won the 1600m in 4:40.11, while Josh Galen took 2nd in 4:41.7.  Batra who is our other super sophomore ran the 800m, 1600m and 3200m in one meet and single-handedly scored 13 points for the team. The Culver boys were led by Alex Jackson who took 1st in both the 100m in 10.7 and 200m in 21.6, which ranks him as one the fastest in State.  Beverly’s Cameron Countryman took 2nd in both races running the 100m in 10.8 (11.04 FAT) and 200m in 21.9 (22.14 FAT) also ranking him as one of the top sprinters in State.  The Culver boys won the 4X100m relay in 42.8, while Beverly’s quartet of Mario Conti, Cameron Countryman, Ariel Nasib and Alex Rohani took 2nd in 43.0 (43.14 FAT)—-very fast relay times for a dual meet.  Beverly’s time is #8 on Beverly’s all time list.  Other highlights:  Mario Conti took 3rd in the 400m in 51.1.  Ariel Nasib took 4th in the 100m in 11.3.  Julian Jackson took 2nd in both the shot put in 47-2 1/2 and discus in 119-7.  David Bresnick took 4th in the discus in 101-10.  Garret Kaplan took 1st in the pole vault in 8-0.
GIRLS VARSITY:  The Girls Varsity distance squad ran multiple events so that all-out efforts were not the rule of the day.  They were out to get points and win the meet, which they did handily.  Sydney Gray took the 400m in 61.4, with Chelsea Simmons in 3rd in 63.6.  Big sister Brianna Simmons took 1st in the 800m in 2:38.7 and 1600m in 5:39.8, as her fellow runners Ashley Bootesaz (2nd in the 800m in 2:39.5 and 3rd in the 1600m in 5:47.3) and Lily Ting (2nd in the 1600m in 5:44.7 and 3rd in the 800m in 2:40.2) swept the middle distance events.  Erica Hendry took 4th in the 1600m in 5:55.82.   The Girls Varsity 4X100m relay took first with Vanessa Torres, Chelsea Simmons, Allison Wolff and Sydney Gray running a 51.2.  Faith France took first in the 100m hurdles in 17.7, with Liza Raffi in 2nd in 17.9.  France also took 2nd in the 300m hurdles in 54.0.  Vanessa Torres and Allison Wolff took first and second respectively in the 100m in 13.2 and 13.3 and did the same in the 200m in 27.4 and 27.6.   Taylor McBride took 1st in the shot put in 26-7 1/2.  Sydney Baines took 2nd in the discus in 64-3.  Melina Nasab took 1st in the pole vault in 7-0, with Zhaklya Bangura in 2nd in 6-6.
GIRLS FS:  The Girls Frosh-Soph team defeated Culver City 85-13 and Hawthorne 77-24.  Like the Varsity squad the distance runners ran multiple events to get points as they swept the 800m, 1600m and 3200m.   Sydney Segal took 1st in 1600m in 6:05.9 and 2nd in the 800m in 2:51.6, while Jessica Robert won the 800m in 2:51.5 and took 2nd in the 1600m in 6:06.  Marisa Rothman took 3rd in the 1600m in 6:06.1.  DeEun Lee took 3rd in the 800m in 2:52.9.  Elena Rust won the 400m in 66.0, with Carmen Gratz in 2nd in 66.8, and Carmen Perez took 3rd in 68.5 for the sweep.  Elena Rust also took 2nd in the 200m in 28.4.   The Girls 4X100m relay took first in 53.70.
BOYS FS: The Boys Frosh-Soph team defeated Culver City 70-35 and Hawthorne 75-29.  Aaron Karlin was the star as he took 1st in both the 800m in 2:15.5 and 1600m in 5:07.5, then anchored the 4X400m relay to victory.  Jeff Toobi took 2nd in the 400m in 57.2.  Omid Hakimianpour won the 200m in 24.0 and then took 2nd in the 100m in 11.8.  Chris Saade took 1st in the discus in 71-6.

VARSITY:   The Boys Varsity middle distance and distance runners quartet of senior Nick Harper (4:44.93), junior Josh Galen (4:37.93), and our super sophomore duo of Chanan Batra (4:37.93) and Alex Rohani (4:34.23) were the stars of the team at the Culver Invite, as they ran the Boys Varsity 4X1600m relay running away with victory in a time of 18:34.24, shattering the old school record of 19:33.60 set in 2008.  The time is #7 in State!  The same quartet came back to run the 4X800m relay taking 2nd to Venice H.S. 8:21.97 to Beverly’s 8:23.59 (#2 all time at Beverly) [The splits: Harper 2:11.69, Galen 2:06.23, Rohani 2:03.10 & Batra 2:02.59].   Not to be outdone, The Girls Varsity 4X800m relay of Lily Ting (2:34.92), Ashley Bootesaz (2:34.16), Sydney Gray (2:29.91) & Brianna Simmons (2:26.61) took 2nd in their event to Mira Costa, running nowhere near their personal bests, but yet managed to run 10:05.59 (#3 all time at Beverly—and ranking them at #16 in State!). The Boys Varsity 4X400m Relay (Mario Conti, Cameron Countryman, Alex Rohani and Joel Steinberg) took 2nd place to Dorsey H.S. in a time of 3:27.36 with Alex Rohani running an unofficial hand time split of 49.5 for the 400m, which only suggests that the FS 400m school record will be broken this year. Overlooked has been our field event athletes.  Julian Jackson took 2nd in the shot put in 45-9 1/2  and 3rd in the discus in 106-11.  Chelsea Austin tied for 2nd in the Girls Varsity high jump in 4-10 (tied for #9 all time at Beverly).  Ariel Nasib took 4th in the Boys Varsity 100m into a headwind running 11.65.  The Girls Varsity 4X1600m relay of Erica Hendry, Lily Ting, Ashley Bootesasz and Sydney Gray took 2nd in a time of 23:26.00 (#4 all time at Beverly).  The Girls Varsity Distance Medley Relay of Ashley Bootesaz, Elena Rust, Sydney Gray and Brianna Simmons took 1st place in a time of 13:18.17 (#4 all time at Beverly) and Simmons split for the 1600m was an excellent 5:20.94.  The Boys sprinters of Cameron Countryman, Willie Green, Joel Steinberg and Ariel Nasib took 2nd in the 4X100m relay in 44.55 and Cameron Countryman, Mario Conti, Ariel Nasib and Willie Green took 3rd in the 4X200m relay in 1:33.60.
FROSH SOPH:  The Girls FS 4X1600m relay of Jessica Robert, DeEun Lee, Marisa Rothman & Sydney Segal took 1st in a time of 23:45.11. The same team in the Girls FS 4X800m relay took 2nd place in 10:53.14. Jessica Robert continues to amaze with her stellar performances running an 800m split time in 2:29.08. The Girls FS DMR of Jessica Robert, DeEun Lee, Joya Mehdizeden and Sydney Segal took 1st in 14:05.75.  Frosh Soph Chris Saade won the Boys Frosh shot put in 38-3 and then took 3rd in the discus at 82-7.  Of note was Eli Flesch 1600m split on the 4X1600m relay running 4:51.11.

MARCH 10, 2011 – Tri-Meet BH, MICO, North @ Mira Costa H.S.
MIRA COSTA DOMINATES TRI-MEET
GIRLS FROSH-SOPH SET SCHOOL RECORD in 4X100m Relay in 51.7 (51.84 FAT) !
CAMERON COUNTRYMAN WINS 200m in 22.5 (22.74 FAT)
ALEX ROHANI WINS 400m in 50.8 (50.94 FAT)
BRIANNA SIMMONS WINS 800m in 2:28.9
Mira Costa dominated the non-league tri-meet with Beverly and North Torrance sweeping each division, but Beverly had some outstanding performances in the meet.  Beverly as a team was second in the Girls Varsity, Boys Frosh-Soph and Girls Frosh Soph, while the Boys Varsity finished in third behind North Torrance.  The Boys Varsity though had some of the outstanding performances of the day.  Cameron Countryman won the Boys Varsity 200m by a good margin in 22.5 (22.74 FAT), which moves him in a tie for #26 all time at Beverly. Then sophomore Alex Rohani ran away with the Boys Varsity 400m in 50.8 (50.94 FAT), which puts him in a tie for #29 on the Varsity all time list and #3 on the Frosh Soph all time list.  The Frosh Soph school record is 50.64, so it looks like Rohani has the chance to break the school record.  As usual Brianna Simmons ran away with the Girls Varsity 800m in 2:28.9.  However, the highlight of the meet was the Girls Varsity 4X100m relay that took second to powerful Mira Costa’s relay team led by their star CIF sprinter Ashlee Dotson.  The Beverly team was composed entirely of Frosh-Soph runners of Vanessa Torres, Allison Wolff, Chelsea Simmons & Elena Rust, who ran a time of 51.7 (51.84 FAT), which breaks easily the school record for the Frosh-Soph Girls of 52.24 set in 1998, and also ranks them as #26 on the Varsity all time list at Beverly.
Other performances that made the all time list at the meet:  Jessica Robert ran the Girls varsity 1600m in 5:40.9 (#13 FS and #29 Varsity).  Erica Hendry Girls Varsity 3200m in 12:59.3 (tie #26 Varsity). Vanessa Torres Girls Varsity 200m in 27.44 FAT (#19 FS).  Chris Saade Boys Frosh-Soph Discus 93-10 (#30 FS). Julia Mason Girls Varsity Discus 70-1 (#23 Varsity).  Emma Akilu Girls Frosh-Soph Discus 51-8 (#27 FS).  Taylor McBride Girls Varsity Shot Put 27-4 (#26 Varsity).  Boys Varsity 4X100m relay of Willie Green, Cameron Paysinger, Joel Steinberg & Ariel Nasib 44.24 FAT (tie #29).
Other performances of note:  Sydney Segal Girls FS 3200m in 12:29.6; Chelsea Austin Girls Varsity high jump in 4-8; Melina Nasab Girls Varsity pole vault 7-6; Lily Ting in Girls Varsity 400m in 63.5; Erica Hendry in Girls Varsity 1600m in 5:57.5; Willie Green in Boys Varsity high jump in 5-6; and the Girls Varsity 4X400m relay of Elena Rust, Sydney Gray, Lily Ting and Brianna Simmons in 4:21.90.

MARCH 5, 2011 @ Downey High School
FROSH SOPH Teams Medal @ Downey Relays (Updated)
After the Howard Edelman Inter-Squad Meet on March 3, 2011, which was a meet that saw parents, coaches, teachers and athletes run relays mostly for fun and for the athletes to get a feel for a meet setting, the predominately frosh soph team competed at the Downey Relays on Saturday March 5, 2011.  Although the bus to take the team to the meet arrived late, and the sprint medley relays missed their races, subsequently the team won many medals (top 5 overall in each event won medals).   Unfortunately, times were not announced or posted, and results were written down by hand.  When the results were finally posted only the top 5 places were given official times.  However, set forth below are the places and official times if in the top 5 overall and unofficial times if not in the top 5 overall.  Only official times count toward making the all time list, as the unofficial times for the most part were faster than the official times in comparing times.  The highlight of the meet, was the girls frosh soph team in the Varsity 4X400m relay when Chelsea Simmons, Allison Wolff, Elena Rust & Vanessa Torres took first place in an official time of 4:24.02, which is #3 all time at Beverly for a frosh-soph team.  Then our girls distance runners (Brianna Simmons, Lily Ting, Ashley Bootesaz & Sydney Gray) ran the sprint relay 4X200m to get some speed work coming in 4th overall in a time of 1:54.47.  The girls frosh soph team in the 4X200 running in the Varsity race as well took 6th overall in 1:54.68 unofficially. The boys varsity team of Ariel Nasib, Frank Brown, Joel Steinberg & Willie Green took 2nd in their heat (but overall did not medal) but ran 1:34.85 unofficially so that too will not count for the all time list.

FEBRUARY 26, 2011 @ Save Mart Center, Fresno, CA
BOYS & GIRLS 4X800m Relays Take 2nd @ State Indoor Invite
Highlights:   The Beverly Boys and Girls 4X800m relays running unattached for the Beverly Hills Track Club both took 2nd place at the State Indoor Invite.  The boys team of Alex Rohani, Nick Harper, Chanan Batra and Josh Galen took 2nd place in 8:25.11 finishing behind Carlmont High School (of Belmont, CA in Northern California) who took 1st in 8:23.71.  Beverly’s performance is #2 all time at the school and it was run indoors, which times are slower due to the banked indoor track and shorter distance per lap meaning more turns to run.  Beverly Boys beat Gahr (the pre-favorite) in third and Fairfield in fourth.  The Beverly Girls team of Sydney Gray, Ashley Bootesasz, Jessica Robert and Brianna Simmons also took 2nd place in a time of 10:58.85.  Rio Mesa high school took 1st in 10:38.30.  The only two teams to break 11 minutes.  The girls finished ahead of Colony in third, Ventura in fourth and Fountain Valley in fifth, all top teams.  Then the boys foursome of Cameron Countryman, Chanan Batra, Nick Harper and Alex Rohani in the 4X400m relay took first in their heat in 3:41.43, which with 5 heats run placed them in 10th place overall.  The girls 4X400m, which included Sydney Gray, Vanessa Torres, Brianna Simmons and Lily Ting took 2nd in their heat in 4:23.20, which with 5 heats run placed them in 15th place overall.  The only individual event run by Beverly was Cameron Countryman in the 600m run, where he ran a time of 1:20.33, where he finished 5th in his heat and 16th overall as 6 heats were run. Countryman is running longer distances to build strength for the sprints he will be running once the outdoor season begins in March 2011.  The team now turns it’s attention to preparing for the outdoor track season.

FEBRUARY 5, 2011
STATE INDOOR INVITE QUALIFICATION @ CSUN (updated results)
The first unofficial meet of the season was the State Indoor Invite qualifications held at Cal State U., Northridge.  The top 3 in each event plus those who met a standard time qualified for the State Indoor Invite to be held at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA on February 26, 2011.  As this is not a CIF sanctioned meet, the athletes ran for the Beverly Hills Track Club, and will run unattached at the meet on February 25.  Beverly had a number of athletes qualify. The highlight of the meet was when the Boys 4X800m relay took 1st place in a time of 8:29.86 (Nick Harper 2:09.72, Chanan Batra 2:07.72, Alex Rohani 2:06.72 and Josh Galen 2:05.72).  That is the third fastest time for the relay on Beverly’s all time list.  The girls also ran the 4X800m relay and took 2nd place in a time of 10:33.64 (Brianna Simmons 2:31.91, Sydney Gray 2:37.91, Lily Ting 2:40.91, Ashley Bootesaz 2:43.91), far off the girls best, but their time is still #4 all time on Beverly’s all time list for the event.  Chanan Batra ran an excellent 800m running 2:02.98, #6 all time for the boys frosh soph list at Beverly. Jessica Robert put in a fine performance in the girls 1600m run with a time of 5:43.58.  That ranks her #16 on the Beverly all time frosh-soph list and #25 on the varsity all time list. The girls 4X400m relay took 4th in 4:12 (Sydney Gray, Vanessa Torres, Lily Ting, & Brianna Simmons) which is #24 on the Beverly all time list.   Vanessa Torres took 3rd in the girls open 550m in 1:32.34.   Alex Rohani took 3rd in the 550m in 1:17.06, with Cameron Countryman moving up from the sprints to take 5th in 1:17.82.  Josh Galen ran the 2 miles in 10:29.73, with Eli Flesch running 10:40.52.  In the mile Nick Harper ran 4:54.65.

OUR PAST CELEBRATED
The upcoming 2011 track & field season means we need to celebrate our past history and anniversaries of past achievements by Beverly athletes in the track & field program.  There are four athletes that are celebrated for the upcoming 2011 season, who were all High School All Americans:
70 year Anniversary –  Stan Bowen 1941
Stan Bowen is considered one of Beverly’s great hurdlers.  In 1941 he took 1st place in league for both the 120 yd hurdles and 220 yd hurdles.  In his speciality the 220 yd hurdles he took 1st place in the CIF Southern Section Semi-Finals (the equivalent of the Division Finals today) and then took 3rd place in the CIF Southern Section Finals (the equivalent of the CIF Masters Meet today). He finished 4th in State.  His then school record in 1941 of 24.6 in the 220 yd hurdles secured him as a High School All American.
50 year Anniversary – John Beck 1961
John Beck is considered by many track athletes that ran in the 1960’s for Beverly to be one of the school’s great milers. Unfortunately for him he ran at a time when the league Beverly was in had two other great milers who were All Americans.  The league competition was so great in the mile run that articles were written in the local newspapers in the Southland of the great mile races being held just in league. In the league finals Beck took 3rd, but then at the CIF Southern Section Semi-Finals (equivalent of the CIF Southern Section Division Finals today) he took 2nd place.  Unfortunately at the CIF Southern Section Finals (equivalent of todays CIF Masters meet) he did not qualify for State.  However, his 1961 Mile time of 4:23.20 (4:21.70c 1600m) was a then school record and secured him as a High School All American.
30 year Anniversary –  Barbara Gottlieb 1981
The school has a long history of 800 meter runners (8 high school All Americans in all), and Barbara Gottlieb was one of those highly celebrated.  In 1981 she took 2nd in league in both the 800m and 1600m and anchored the 4X400m relay to a first place finish.  Then at the CIF Southern Section Division 4A Finals she took 2nd in the 800m and 6th in the 1600m.  In the CIF Southern Section Masters she took 4th place, and went to the State Meet where she unfortunately DQ’ed.  However, her time for the 800m in 1981 was a then school record 2:11.64 (#2 all time at Beverly today), which record was not broken for 29 years, until last year’s track season of 2010.  Her time in the 800m of 2:11.64 secured her High School All American honors in 1981.
30 year Anniversary – Nathan Phillips 1981
Nathan Phillips was predominately known as a shot putter, but his greatest achievement was in the discus throw.  In 1981 the discus was competed at the CIF level but not at all league finals.  In the league finals in the shot put he took 3rd in league.  Then at the CIF Southern Section 3A Division Finals he took 2nd place in the shot put.  At the CIF Masters Meet he competed in the discus throw and took 4th place, earning him a State Meet birth, where he had the 12th best discus throw in State.  In 1981 he set 2 school records:  the shot put in 57-1 1/4 and discus in 172-3.  He is still #2 all time in the shot put and his discus throw is still the school record.  His discus throw of 172-3 secured him as a High School All American in the event in 1981.
